What bothers me is them saying they will send 6 week old chicks, and sending 1-2 week olds in a big box with no heat pack! It is 10 degrees here! Of course, the pullet was dead.

Laura, I got some info for you! I have been corresponding with someone near me who has gorgeous BLRW! He is NPIP and I had asked him a couple of months ago about it. I just asked him about AI and here is what he said:

As far as the testing, yes to become NPIP in the state of Ohio, you are tested for AI and Pullorum. The Pullorum test is a quick little blood sample collected from under the wing and you will know those results before he leaves that day, the AI testing is an oral swab and that goes to Columbus for testing, I forget how long that takes, I want to say 4-5 days. He will give you your NPIP number and all of the paperwork that day and then he will contact you when they AI tests are completed. Then he will mail you a booklet of NPIP forms and your NPIP cards.
The testing was $30.00 for flocks up to 50 birds last year, not sure if they have raised the price for this year. If you have other fowl that you want tested he can do that as well as far as I know. I can't remember what the cost was for over 50 birds. He will not test all 50 birds. I think he usually tests about 10-12 for Pullorum and maybe 20 for AI. This will be my 3rd year getting tested and knock on wood, I have not had any positives. He also told me that it is quite rare in this area, but we buy birds, eggs and chicks from all over the country, not to mention wild birds can bring in AI so I think it is a good thing to know your flocks status.
The whole process took him about 45-60 minutes to complete. It helps to speed up the process if you have your birds cooped or caged when he arrives so that your not chasing birds all over the place.

He is due to have it done again in early February, so he thought it would be a great idea to do mine the same day. Hopefully my birds aren't too young yet and I can be tested in another month!

I have finally updated the status here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/paypal-hatching-eggs-swap-status-contests-updates-and-rules

If you are on the restricted list, but madamwlf or one of the other admins has cleared you to be on the unrestricted list, just know that I am working on getting everyone moved to the correct list. Just be patient, please. All names I don't recognize automatically get put on the restricted list and when I get confirmation of those who should be moved, I will move the names. I am sorry if this causes confusion, but we have had quite a few new people join us since we moved to this new thread

Oh no. That's horrible. Maybe it doesn't feel like winter in Florida but darn, check the weather people. Some of the country is actually cold this time of year.

Seriously, I just don't think they care. They are getting their money but loosing birds because of their carelessness. Poor babies.

I use the pulp ones and have had no issues at all.  In fact, I will never go back to laying the eggs down for hatching.  I've gotten way better hatch rates with sitting them up in cartons.

Do you cut them or trim them in any way? I'm thinking about trying this method.
