I know, I saw that and immediately thought, "Oooh! I need more Basque eggs!" Speaking of which, I have to check in on how the current crop are doing sometime

I'm sorry that is horrible for my and my bator. I just had a horrible hatch for someone else on non shipped eggs. Of course my x-mas day hatch that couldn't get send out due to the blizzard ALL hatched. I just candled them again last night and you get 12 chicks.

I think personally, when I get to the point where I can offer shipped chicks (which won't be for a couple of years yet, likely), that the only way I'm going to do it is by pre-order: You buy them, you put down a deposit, you tell me when you want them, and I will hatch them for that mailing date. Obviously, this will require much practice on my hatching techniques (and better equipment, lol!) plus it'd probably mean extras for my customers since I'd obviously always set extra eggs to be on the safe side. But ESPECIALLY when you're dealing with $50 and $100 birds, why wouldn't you do a better job shipping/communicating than the folks selling chicks for two bucks apiece?

I wish they were $100 birds now.

For those of us who cannot use the scissor method to cull a chick I found these 2 articles and thought it might be helpful.
How to cull chicks

Euthanize Small Animals

An ucky, unpleasant, but necessary conversation. Thank you for sharing that! So far I've been lucky -- everyone that's made it out of the shell has been sturdy and healthy :) I had one chick who wobbled badly and would fall over backwards every time he lifted his head up to drink (or to swallow) -- it was adorable and only lasted about 30 hours before he found his sense of balance.

Came back from the PO about an hour ago to pick up my first order of hatchery chicks for the 2013 swap season. Not pretty Meyer didn't include a heat pack and only 12 made it. One is barely clinging too. You would think that since they replace their birds it would be in their best interest to do so, heck if they offered it I'd pay a couple of bucks extra. I'm sure they'll make it right but just not a fun way to start the day.

Well that's a bummer! I have a lot of Meyer birds in my random flock, all gotten as chicks -- but I just drive up there and pick them up, so not familiar with their shipping. That's an awful way to start the day

I can't believe my NYD hatch. I set 28 eggs total. 8 shipped SFH and 20 of my own eggs, most of which were at least 2 weeks old and had sat on the counter. All 8 of the shipped eggs hatched - including the cracked one, and the one with the detached aircell!

and 16 of my own eggs hatched. The 4 I had to remove were probably 3 weeks older or more. I am overrun with chicks. I wish I was NPIP so I could ship some of these out to you guys. (Note to self - GET TO WORK ON NPIP!)
