Last July I decided after a 10 year chicken absence that it would be nice to have a few chickens for their eggs again. I built my own incubator and my 17 yr. old daughter and I anxiously awaited our 15 Barred Rocks eggs hatch date. 9/15 did hatch and I learned so much from the experience that I had to do it again...LOL. Each hatch after that was a new learning experience and helped me develop my carpentry skills as I was building chicken tractors and coops for each set that hatched. I now have 45 chickens ranging in age from 1 month to 5 months and love every one of them.I'm just getting started with the madness. My first chickens were purchased October of last year. It was only supposed to be 3 or 4 hatchery chicks for eggs. Ha! Famous last words. I now have 5 pens and need about 20 more for the 100+ eggs I already have on my swap list for spring. Hubby and I have been married for 27 years. We may not make 28 when he finds this out.
This sounds exactly like me. I may not have 250 chickens but I am working on it...I started with the same intent two years ago (after a 20 year absence from poultry). I now have 250+ chickens, 25 coops/runs, and three incubators that have been running nearly non-stop for the last yearChicken math + OCD =![]()

With all the chicken tractors I have been building I am really considering a barn just for the chickens. It is so addicting! I started in March this year with 6 hens and a free Roo. Took over a year to convince DH to let me have chickens. Now up to 24 chickens and 2 turkeys. Two chicken coops and now a barn 16x30 just for poultry! I tried to fight the chicken math in the beginning.......
We just recently added piglets to another building and now are talking about getting a calf. Who would have thought I'd be a farmer! My DH is really getting into this now!
yup, he has been on the PFD for 12 years. he is also a paramedic, roving captain and in hazmat school as i type. i swear he is trying to see how high my anxiety can go!!!!! my neighbor behind us is also on the PFD, he is a captain and a PIO, he HATES my chickens and ducks. part of the reason i had to sell my appleyards.Pastrymama,
You got a firefighter for a DH too? Awesome! Love my DH!!
My DH volunteers as a firefighter/paramedic. I'm sure once he retires from the Army he'll go full time.yup, he has been on the PFD for 12 years. he is also a paramedic, roving captain and in hazmat school as i type. i swear he is trying to see how high my anxiety can go!!!!! my neighbor behind us is also on the PFD, he is a captain and a PIO, he HATES my chickens and ducks. part of the reason i had to sell my appleyards.
