I've got chicks from 202roosterlane hatching. Two are out, and at least one pipped. One was a clear. We'll see on the other two, likely before the day is out. :)

These are Buff Orpingtons.

Ok..... Feeling very discouraged.... Had one chick hatch during the night, but it has cross beak really bad, and the other one that pipped yesterday and started to zip during the night has this gooey foamy stuff coming out from the whole where it pipped from.... is that glued chick? Weird, since my humidity has actually been pretty low during hatch and stayed high during lockdown... that one is still moving, not sure if it is stuck, nothing from the other eggs yet....

Daloorashens, I'm so sorry

Yeah, I was hoping to wake up to a few more chicks and I didn't. It definitely makes it easier to take, though, when I have some warm furry fuzzballs upstairs to play with.

And COF, LOL!!!! I know what you mean :)

I'm sorry. It is always hard when they hatch with deformities and you have to kill them.
I am trying to breed especially for healthy, strong birds, and after that for type, so I do not keep anything that needs to be babied along. I feel it is cruel to keep something that will have to fight so hard just to survive. (Not pointing fingers at anyone, just stating my feelings on the subject!)

I hope the rest do well for you.

Rachael hatched the best d'Uccle yet from my d'Uccles right before Christmas. He looked perfect in every way and was so cute, but he could not stand. I tried what I could to help him, but he had no control over his feet. He lived for two days, but died on Christmas Eve. If he had appeared to be in pain, I would not have kept him that long, but he didn't seem to hurt and I was so hoping he would gain control of his legs.

oh boy, those are some nice eggs! On that site my username is the 1st part of my email so its different. I've already bid but was ready to increase, I'll keep sitting on my hands then!

Hi puglady! We do have a bit of a "gentleman's agreement" -- well, I say 'we' but since I can't possibly bid on anything at RBA for the foreseeable future, it doesn't really apply to me :) (That works the other way 'round, too -- if you bid on an item, let folks know you're after it!

) On the other side of the coin, the folks here are incredible about sharing eggs from their "winnings". I couldn't possibly afford some (most) (heck, almost all) of the breeds I've gotten/am getting if I'd had to buy them at "regular" price.

I really, really want to return the favor someday!!!

Good to know. Thank you Cluckitall! I was looking to fill up the other 1/2 of the 'bator but will do so on the swap page instead. I'll probably be going for one later in the month though!

yep i am thrilled to have been suckered into this swap and lead down the path of hatching and enablers lol. The sharing and real sense of caring that others get something they are pining for is great. I like the rules that keep everyone honest and swapping.

side note ...we have a few dewlap buff toulouse 2012 juveniles (2 ganders and 2 or 3 geese) who didnt make the cut for the breeding group. GREAT birds, strong, healthy, forage well, easy keepers. Likely to grow out more over the next year and half. I am guessing pet quality across the board, but 1 or 2 might surprise down the road. We have been bad mouthed for this, but since we are a business they need to go. We dont keep and feed animals that arent in breeding groups/pairs ect. So anyways....they are available if anyone wants some super heavy very calm geese who will chat your ear off. They are priced low (only to re-coop the shipping costs we have in them)

Hey guys? Can you "shrink-wrap" eggs that haven't pipped yet?

I'm pretty sure that's what I did. I was very careful, when removing chicks, to look for pips in the unhatched eggs before I opened the 'bator -- there's always the chance of missing one or two, but if I did, it really was one or two. The rest are all still intact -- nary a pip, even this morning -- and the only thing I can think is I did manage to shrink-wrap them inside the shell. Everyone who pipped made it out with no issues at all, and I have a fine, healthy batch of twenty-odd chicks upstairs, yay!!!

Is it possible that's what happened?

Another question: is there any particular reason eggs can't hatch in the turners, so long as they are off?

As far as temps and humidity go, the new incubator has proved itself pretty well to me :) After this hatch, I want to take it apart and redo it a bit so once the eggs go in and that door shuts, it doesn't open again till the hatch is totally complete (well, except for candling). Which means some way to limit the amount of egg-football that goes on, and hatching trays with sides high enough that I know the chicks can't climb over and fall. I'm pretty darn sure I would've gotten at least a few more hatches if I hadn't opened the 'bator to take chicks out, so I want to eliminate any need for doing so next time.

on the subject of shipping regulations.

I propose that in order to swap people should have their state listed for their location so that we can catch if there will be a problem shipping to them.
I didn't have mine listed, so no one knew to tell me that shipping to Virginia was a problem. and I had no idea!

now I am looking at having to forfeit out of several swaps and am bummed. But I certainly don't want to get anyone in trouble.
