yes drastic swings in humidity can effect the membrane even if no external pips yet. Not as quickly as ones with pips, but it can.

eggs can hatch upright in turners, most dont do it because the mess you have to clean off the turners later. We have set chicken eggs upright in egg cartons to hatch before.

Thank you! Yeah, somehow I missed your answer -- sorry about that! I think that's what I must've done. Okay, lesson learned

I hadn't considered hatching in turners for precisely that reason, but I had an egg crack during incubation and drip all over the turners -- and it wiped off without even a damp sponge. I'd wash the turners between uses anyway, so I might just do that. I'll try it with a small test hatch and see how it works.

Thanks again!

yeah like I said i have done it in pulp egg cartons (they were trimmed down) and they hatched well.

I do mine in the stryrofoam egg cartons.... I watch for upside down pips OFTEN or you could lose one every once in awhile. I read not to use the pulp...it absorbs too much moisture, did you find that an issues? The other plus of styrofoam is you can clean it and use them over and over.

I use the pulp ones and have had no issues at all. In fact, I will never go back to laying the eggs down for hatching. I've gotten way better hatch rates with sitting them up in cartons.
