Lol I have some weird quirky hobbies and if there were at least 10 more hours in a day I could do more of them. I do some origami that I illuminate, I batik shirts and do some encaustic art on wood and canvas, I paint draw etc, I do some wood sculpture, knit, and sew...,, :hide
Wow! wish I had time to do more artistic things!

Does anyone on here have GREAT Silver Laced Wyandottes? I am working on Violet/Blue laced wyandottes, but I need some good SLW's to proceed.

Can someone post the link on how to set up a swap page in our signature line? Thanks!

I've searched but can't find it.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks the search function on here stinks. I can never find what I'm looking for even when using the advanced search functions.

He donated the trailer because he doesn't want chickens or chicks in the house. He built me an awesome smaller brooder box, holds about 10-15 comfortable for about two months. I just need to figure out some sort of cover for the trailer...I'm thinking an 'A' frame or hoop covered in wire and tarp. I think the trailer will be more of a grow-out pen with very little added heat. I've got two 5 week old chicks outside in a 6x8 covered hoop-house pen. The only added heat they have is a seedling heat mat that they only cuddle on when the temps are below freezing, right now its 27 outside.

still trying to work it all out in my brain before I ask him to build anything...

I am hoping that brooding chicks in the house will motivate my husband. Right now I have 8 in the broken garden tub in our master bathroom. I told him I would never think of putting chicken in my bathtub if it worked...hint hint

I have a still air incubator that I use as a hatcher that I can put them in, but I candled them and it looks like nothing is developing. However- it is only day 5 today

OMG, pure silence. It only happens when all of the chicks have gone to sleep!
Or never if you have baby quail, I swear cots peep in their sleep.
It"s been a rough 3 weeks but I know things will get better
:( kisses to you
Hey guys? Can you "shrink-wrap" eggs that haven't pipped yet?

I'm pretty sure that's what I did. I was very careful, when removing chicks, to look for pips in the unhatched eggs before I opened the 'bator -- there's always the chance of missing one or two, but if I did, it really was one or two. The rest are all still intact -- nary a pip, even this morning -- and the only thing I can think is I did manage to shrink-wrap them inside the shell. Everyone who pipped made it out with no issues at all, and I have a fine, healthy batch of twenty-odd chicks upstairs, yay!!!

Is it possible that's what happened?

Another question: is there any particular reason eggs can't hatch in the turners, so long as they are off?

As far as temps and humidity go, the new incubator has proved itself pretty well to me :-) After this hatch, I want to take it apart and redo it a bit so once the eggs go in and that door shuts, it doesn't open again till the hatch is totally complete (well, except for candling). Which means some way to limit the amount of egg-football that goes on, and hatching trays with sides high enough that I know the chicks can't climb over and fall. I'm pretty darn sure I would've gotten at least a few more hatches if I hadn't opened the 'bator to take chicks out, so I want to eliminate any need for doing so next time.
Others have replied too, but I wanted to say I have gotten chicks stuck under the turner. So I use egg cartons for hatching much easier. And cleaner
It is harder for some of us than others. You still have to be AI tested either way. In Michigan, that is VERY EXPENSIVE since we are not under grant. While I know my birds don't have AI, I would have to pay a vet to come and test every single bird once I get mine going again. I'd have to pay the vet fee, fee for them to collect samples from every bird, and then the fee for the testing itself. It is actually very cost prohibitive here. Until I can actually make money at chickens, I won't be able to ship to VA, but that's just Michigan...
On other swaps ( not sure about this one) it does say to make sure you can receive eggs in your state. I think it has to be on the buyer to check, rather then the person sending eggs, but that's just me. I know Virginia has come up a number of times for different people. Same as people who wanted things shipped to PR and Canada and AK, it is a dicey proposition. Buyer should decide IMO if they want to take the chance.

Mind you its not my decision, but every barrier you put up for people trying to make a first egg swap makes people less likely to join. There is a NPIP swap too, for that reason. If you can do it and are NPIP and know it, putting it in your signature so people know immediately is a great and courteous idea! Great suggestion.

I'd put them in another incubator or under your broody if its only day 5. There should be hope.
