Just wanted to tell you both about what I think of Jon's birds.

On first impression I am VERY pleased with him and will for sure buy from him again. The are the correct age/size, they look to be in good health, are a good weight, and made it threw shipping (took 2 days) without any problems. He shipped exactly when he told me he would. And gave me a tracking number right away!

I will try and post a couple pictures of them later

Is this the same guy that has an auction on RBA now that I've bid on?

Good news! I have three sets of eggs in the incubator now. The first are the ones I put under the broody originally. I thought they weren’t fertile, (based on breaking open another egg for breakfast) but turns out they were! I candled last night and I think I have 5 developing out of 6!!! Three Barnevelder eggs, a dorking egg and a random olive egg I got from a friend here at work.

They are about ½ way through and I think I saw movement in all 5 of them!!!!! These were my non-shipped eggs. I am so friggin nervous…this is my first time, guys. I know I am going to screw this up! The other two sets are shipped and haven’t been in there long enough to candle yet, and some of them are Marans, so I won’t be able to see anything anyways.

I guess I need to find another ‘bator to put the first set on lock-down with! And a hydro-thingie to see what the humidity is.

any recomendations on a hydro thingie?

Scared to build my own incubator. but trying to gather courage. is there a digital thermostat available that would be good for home-made incubators?

I bought several of these hygrometers off of ebay. Love them!

Watch this guys videos off of Youtube on how to build a bator. I ended up building 2 of them and they are great at keeping temp and humidity.Since buying my Sportsman I now use them only for hatching. I actually entered them in the NYD incubator contest and you can see pictures of them there. I had no prior building/electrical experience and had no problems. The first one cost me around $20 to build because I had a lot of the stuff laying around the house and used an old cooler I had. The second one was around $60 because I had to buy a cooler and wafer thermostat.

Good to know. I would really like to start raising my own meat birds without having to buy chicks all the time.

In order to find the best method, would you mind telling me how you cull day olds when they are born deformed?  I have two Coronations that hatched late and dragging their bowels.  (I have already culled.  I'm not letting them suffer.)  I'm just trying to find the best method for me.

It seems like anytime I have a really late hatcher that it is defective.  I'm about to decide anything over a day late, and out the eggs go to the pigs or wildlife.

There is one by Zilla on amazon. Search for temp controller or PID controller.

I don't know much about meat birds. But I do know when I picked up the bigger roo. I was surprised. lol He was heavy for his size. lol And they all had nice full breast.
