I need help. I have noticed eggs missing from under my broody silkies this has been going on for months and I thought they were eating the eggs. Well when I looked and there were 5 eggs missing from under her from just last night, I recovered 4 of them and 1 was right up next to a hole under the ground.

DO I have a rat problem and how do I take care of it without harming my chickens. My worthless barn cats aren't doing there job and ever since I lost my faithful flock protector dog in 2011 she used to get the rats my other dogs won't. Now I have a problem. If it is rats they are taking the eggs from my broody silkie hens every time my silkies go broody.

Can you move your broody bird to a secure cage or a cat carrier so the rats can't get behind them? Its best to move them at night so they won't freak out and eat the eggs.. I had rats get behind the nests and steal the eggs, but never out from under the broody hens because I moved those when they showed they were determined to be broody. I have rat proofed the coop now with metal everywhere there were holes - except the doors. I also rat proofed the roof area so they couldn't use it to sleep in at night - and removed all the branches overhanging the roof. My rats are ground/roof rats - and they are huge! My cats are afraid of them. The only thing that will kill them is my dog, if she can catch them - or the Tomcat Rat snap traps, put them in something only the rats can get into...

so I had myself all psyched out that my 4 eggs were not alive in there and came home today and one has pipped!!!!

trying not to get excited....trying not to get hopes up....

I just made confirmation that the incubator fried the marans and silkies. :/ Of course, it's back to running perfectly now. Since we're moving soon, I'm thinking that we shouldn't hatch anything until we move. I have people interested in eggs up to the point that we move, but still. It feels strange to have an empty bator. Especially with turkey eggs being collected on a regular basis and the blue laying hens have really picked up.

Email drives me freaking crazy. I've had my account for years, and have quite a bit of padding in there. I was almost to nine thousand unread emails, but I'm finally below eight thousand. Mostly junk. My total count, with read emails as well is 10,997 (after disposing of all of those emails!!!) Some are very old conversations, documents, etc for rats, bettas and ball pythons, some are old DC tags from shipping various things, old receipts for random stuff I've purchased, etc. I just can't seem to let them go, even old receipts. BUT, at least it's not papers all over the house. Still digging through the ol' inbox to get rid of crap that's just junk, like sales advertisements from 2008! I closed my last email account for this reason, because I got tired of all the junk, so I just cancelled the account and opened a new one. I don't want to do that again, but holy crap! Does anyone else have a problem with that, or do you guys generally keep up with deleting junk mail at least?
