Here are a couple of pictures of the golden laced wyandotte pair I have. Now tell me what in the world went wrong in the gene pool for their sizes to be this different.

This is the group that run together. The giant wyandotte cockerel 17 week old is top left--next to two lav orps which are almost 7 months. The other wyandotte I suspect is a roo is in the center in front of the lavs. Same age as Mr. Giant.
Here he is next to his pullet sibling.

And here they are strutting around. He sprouted to this size somewhere at 9 to 12 weeks and hasn't really grown much since. But WOW!

He is larger bodied and taller than every other bird in the pen with him. Its like someone slipped that guy some steroids or something.

Still no pips from any of my eggs in lockdown. I'm being patient, monitoring humidity and temps today and trying not to get anxious.

I do think that since I've had so much trouble with the temp change at night that I will have a good enough excuse to give DH to buy a better incubator now. Hmmm. I get paid this week. Wonder if I could slip that through...

Today started as a rather bad day for me. A week ago I hatched a Rhodebar rooster chick. My only one. Problem was it wasn't using one of its legs. I felt a knot on the leg joint. So I thought I would give it time and see. Nope, not using it. So I put him down this morning. I had a juvie tolbunt polish rooster in with other juvies. I'm a complete believer now in raising crested breeds with crested breeds only. The other birds always pecked his crest out and I am assuming gave him some brain damage. I was going to put him down this morning too but he beat me to it. Found him dead in the coop this morning. By far the worse for me was my Blue Silver Fox Doe. Skittish as heck. 3 weeks ago I came home to find she could not use her back legs. She was still eating and drinking. Was a lot more lovable now but couldn't be a bunny. I gave her time hoping she would get better but it never happened. So I put her down this morning too.

I'm so sorry you had to do that. But I'm glad you had the compassion and strength to do it.

Thanks everyone!! The day did get better. Got the birds all medicated and ordered some chicks for my birthday. So I'm good. Debating on when to take myself out to dinner.

So sorry for your day, never pleasant, but part of the animal husbandry process....

I was so seriously tempted last night by the Bantum Wyandotes. SERIOUSLY TEMPTED. Made the mistake of asking permission and he said no.
