Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Cluckitall how did you serama eggs do from me. Wish you could have picked them up because they tend to not travel well.

As for chicken eggs you do not need to wait for 10 days to candle if they are on day 7 and showing no signs they won't. It only takes 10 days for fowl, such as guineas, turkeys, ducks etc....

But if they are a dark egg it is really hard to see anything until they are partially grown.

Sadly, the only serama I got to hatch from NYD set was one from either Billie Sue or CPL (I lost track!)

Yeah, the ones that aren't developing are very obvious, but I don't do more than spot-check till day 10 (and what the heck, I'll leave 'em in till then just on the offchance I'm wrong). On day 10 I go through all the eggs in the 'bator (87 this set -- that'll take a while

) so like I said, I'm holding final judgement till then. But I'm not encouraged and will really not be happy if two orders of eggs in a row from them have had fertility issues. I can understand a clear here and there. Not the entire batch, or even half of it.

And yes, darn it, one of these days I SO want to get over there to meet you!

Look up "air sacculitis"
Doesn't have the other symptoms associated with this, and the "air" is everywhere, not just under the neck. I did find a couple of old threads on BYC that indicated it might be a ruptured air sac or punctured lung. Doesn't sound too promising. Apparently it can take weeks to heal (only if you can keep the bird still and quiet) and the air has to be let out every day, and they often die anyway. I'm not sure what to do. What a miserable treatment and long isolation time. Poor guy.

I don't know what it is called. There is air coming out of its lung and is stuck under the skin. Sometime they will reabsorb it. Sometimes it will kill them. I read that you could put a needle in it to aspirate it but that could cause and infection. It is usually something in the lungs that causes the problem. I think several things can cause it.
I'm pretty sure you're right. Darn, I hate having to make tough decisions with animal husbandry. I don't want the poor thing to suffer if it gets worse, but I want to give him a chance. Maybe I'll run to Tractor Supply and pick up an antibiotic and a syringe and needle tomorrow and at least give it a try. I'm terrible with needles.

According to that, it's a potential symptom of MG, which does cross the membrane barrier. No expert here, but I'd put him far, far away from your other birds RIGHT NOW.
He's been isolated since the moment I noticed it. I REALLY don't think that's it at all. He is perfectly fine other than the air. I'm going to send an email to the avian specialist at LSU. Dr. Tully is awesome. He has been very helpful to me and usually responds pretty quickly. If he has any concern about this being MG or anything infectious, I'll have him euthanized Monday morning for a necropsy.

Quote: I had 2. One looked miserable and I didn't know what it was and we culled her. The next one I read they can absorb it so I left him. Found him belly up the next day almost dead. I culled him too.

I could not keep up on the Old Timers thread, but one think I took away, if birds can't survive and thrive at my place they need to go. I think they are right there. If you help a bird with something that is not NORMAL they will breed that weakness forward. Not a good thing to have an unthrifty flock. Let the strong survive.

Boy that sounds harsh, and it was not directed at anyone.... sorry JMHO No extraordinary measures are taken at my place to keep a bird alive. Not good for the health of the flock.

I will never ever order hatchery chicks again. These wyandottes have not shut up. Well, not all of them but a few just do nothing but chirp. Everyone else is running around happily chirping and eating. They are driving me nuts.

I was really interested on the Tolbunt that were listed on eBay. I do not know enough about them to know the variation in coloring and such, but their heads looked different to me. I also did not like the feedback rating.......

Here is the message I sent, and what she sent back:

I went to meet Jon who puts up quads of Bresse on RBA, he's only a county away. Super nice guy, very clean facilities, crazy amounts of breeds. Anyway, he has a trio of black bresse if you guys want hatching eggs. His breeding pen of Bresse had some beautiful big birds, and really calm and friendly too. Very impressed.
I want some!
Yep, took the drive all the way out to his farm IN THE RAIN. We are allergic to rain down here in Southern California, gives us uncontrollable bad driving. So it was quite the adventure to pick up the pair of Bresse. I didn't want to bid against you guys here aka the "chicken mafia" so I contacted him directly and he was nice enough to let me come out to pick up.

He has huge incubators, huge hatchers, and a really nice brooding room. What struck me as really nice was how quiet and content they were in the brooding room. No frantic chicks. Actually all of the chickens on his property were really relaxed. He selects for good personality too in his white bresse pen, he demonstrated by picking up the gigantic roosters and petting them. Freaked me out!

If I get a chance to go out there again I'll ask to take some pictures. It'll be in a long time though since I am now officially on chicken probation after I get those bantam araucana/basque chicks from CPL next month. I think the random assortment of 25 dutch bantams did me in on the husband good will.

Super nice guy x5000. Seriously.
Sounds like fun!

Ya, until they are grown. Those buggers go through a lot of food!!
Reason doesn't go over with DH. I am keeping only enough to fullfill 20 eggs a day to sell. I already have customers who have previously gotten in touch wanting jumbos when I didn't have enough, so extras can be considered sold

He won't buy it. I have them set up in the shed and I *think* they will stay warm enough. If not... Oh wellllllll he'll just have to deal with them in the kitchen!!

Remember 20 of those are mine. Tell him to call me if he doesn't believe you...

You could also say you hatched them out for me because I didn't have room in my bator and in return I am giving you half of them???

You're absolutely right, though. My DH just reminded me that he is an "extra" and was destined for the pot anyway. Now I sound harsh.

I'm still going to email Dr. Tully before I make a decision in the event he wants to take a look at him or use him for teaching at the vet school.

What a wonderful acquaintance to have! That's so cool. And I kinda figured you already had, but just in case I figured it was definitely worth saying :) There's so much I don't know yet that as you've probably noticed I don't hand out much advice on the threads, but isolating a sick bird, in case the owner wasn't already doing so? Yeah, that I would say.

BTW, just checked one basque egg earlier this eve and saw lots of pretty veining :) Thank you!
