I think I am just going to quit being nice, other people always seem to have a problem with it when I do. I guess no good deed goes unpunished for sure. I give up.

Hi All!

Actually, the mystery Craigslist poster is me!  You are right, Sah,  I am only doing because this because unique breeds are just not available in MN.  And good stock is even tougher.  A X Silkie for $10 is about as exotic as you get in MPLS and I want to help new chicken owners learn about saving and preserving the heritage breeds.  Besides, I live in the city.  If I can't keep them all, I can at least peddle them.

Every spring, I work with about 100 metro and Suburban families and 3 or 4 schools to start up Urban Chicken Coops.  I run  free day-long workshops about city chicken keeping, we build a varitey of chicken tractors and help them acquire healthy chickens.  It is my way of community building.

What happens with most of these families is that they order the "small city" kind of packages from the hatchery and all of their chickens die or are sick.  You really can't send 3 hatchery chicks to MN in March priority mail and think they will live!  I decided a couple of years ago that we could do better, so I have been working on helping people with this since.  I am super excited this year to be able to move away from the hatchery stock that I have been getting in years past to hatching good quality birds.  But, it is more risk for me.

As far as profit, I don't make any.  Most years, I break even.  I give a ton of chicks away to families that I just want to get addicted.  I just promised 3 of Flocksalot Midgets to the cutest kid in the neighborhood for Easter because he fell so in love with my turkeys and his mom doesn't have the money and I always give birds free to schools and to my students.  BTW:  A photograher contacted me about borrowing some chicks for an easter shoot, I agreed if I could have rights to the pics.  Some of your chicks will be art!!  I will try to share them.

I have had several contact me about eggs and I give them whatever you send me for $18 which is about what it costs for either PP or shipping.  I also pass along any extras to the 4H kids.  I charge more for the chicks because it cost me to lose so many in shipping and hatching.  Also, because those who can pay for the chicks help pay for the ones I give away.  It is a wonderful way of paying for both my hobbies, chickens and wine making.  :celebrate

I guess I really didn't think about you guys not liking this use of the swap.  I am interested in your opinion on it.  I am not sure who "he who shan't be named" is, but I can promise that I am true to my word and honest in my intentions.  If this use feels like an exploitation of your objectives on the swap, I can rethink this years plan to be a bird peddler and go back to ordering hatchery stock.  IDK:  Opinions?

Honestly, Proti, I think it is great. It sounds like you are doing great things in your area. My only issue with it was that it seemed "shady."

I would suggest correcting the spelling. ;)

Sounds like you are having a bad day.

Why did it seem shady?

That is the best word for the way it made me feel.

I am not saying what you did was wrong, because seriously, who here, hasn't sold birds we have gotten in a swap? Or got eggs because some one has requested a specific breed.

And sometimes you don't want to talk about doing good things. Be it because other's think you are bragging, or because you don't want to lessen what you are doing.

No one wants to feel like they were taken advantage of. Not that any of my eggs were involved. :)

Does that make sense?

There was at least one person on here in the beginning who was doing the same thing except he was listing the eggs in auctions and shipping them out once they were received. That meant he was selling people eggs that were potentially 2wks old and handled twice by USPS. It was not well received.

I don't think there's anything wrong with selling the chicks. Some of the ones I've claimed will be sold but to people that I know who really want to have these breeds. I love helping friends find their "perfect" flock.

I think if your intentions are genuine and you're not duping people or scamming them as the previously mentioned person was its not a problem. but that's just my $.02
