And I would keep all PMs from them just in case.

I'm working on getting permanent breeding pens. If I get rid of one breed without replacing it, it will ...ummmm...show good faith! Yeah, that's it! At any rate, I know my hubby. He'll build for me faster, and bigger!, if I actually show signs of cutting back somewhat.
Maybe you'll get some brahmas eventually.

I've used Ideal a lot, and had no problems with them until my most recent order. I've tried other hatcheries and didn't like any of them yet. But this time I ordered three breeds, and lost half of one breed over several days. I'm thinking it was the breed, or the source for that breed. I had Buff Orps, Rose Combed Brown Leghorns, and Dark Brahmas. The Orps and Leghorns have done well. Had to pull one of each in for poopy butt patrol. But the Brahmas just died, and I've had several at a time in for poopy butt patrol. This is my second shot at Brahmas. (other time was eggs, not chicks) I'll give them one more chance on some eggs someone is getting for me next month but if they don't do well, then Brahmas and I will part ways. They may just not be for me, although I love them. But I have enough breeds started and coming to keep me busy for some time to come, so an excuse to delete one from the list would make my hubby happy!

Oh, and I'll chime in on this forum, too! Best thing since sliced bread! I've noticed a few people say if their breeding stock is show quality, but most do not. I assume then that they aren't. Why would I assume they are something that isn't advertised? This forum is fun and friendly, with far fewer spats than at your next family reunion! And I get a chance to try different breeds for a minimal cost. If I then want to upgrade that breed to show quality, I can, but I don't expect to find it here. I do have some eggs from a SQ line of birds coming too, but I paid dearly for those eggs and will drive two hours for them to save them from the USPS!
It's too bad you aren't closer I too was really dissapointed with the Brahmas from Ideal so I found a breeder only problem is I am getting 15 chicks of light and dark Brahmas and I only want TWO hens!! So now I'm going to have a but load of super nice Brahams and nothing to do with them!!

welcome to the fun! and if you seee anything you cant live without, paypal is always an option! I know someone who wants Jersey giants...you wouldn,t happpen to be NPIP would you? I'm in VA and we have wierd shippping regulations...
i hope you feel better....migraines suck.
there are other swaps? ...LOL

I'm NOT NPIP , which is a good point, I need to make that clear on my swap page, good catch!

As for JG - they are still on my wish list. I recently got this one POL pullet, who has a great personality & is lovely, but has some brown in the feathering which I'm told indicates she has something else mixed into her background so she went into the EE pen w/ my pure Ame. roo, If her eggs are nice then I might try a few to see what colors the daughters lay as LF EE. Right now I'm mainly just happy to have such a good sized POL pullet who actually gets along w/ my EE hen "Ugly". Ugly is my best layer ever, but worst on "pens well w/ others :( "& she refused 3 diff. Roos until I got her a pure Ame who she took to instantly. Anyway, currently I'm also looking for nice JG (Black), perhaps someday I'll have at least a good Trio & eggs to offer...

*****HATCHING EGGS ALERT*****
I am looking for the following eggs for friends: Lavender Ameraucana, BLR Wyandotte and Welsummer. If you have these for trade please PM me!! Thank you.

As posted earlier, I have 24+ silkie eggs that can go out tomorrow if anyone wants them. This will be the last ones I offer for a while. If anyone is interested in them pm me offers. If no one wants them I"ll feed them to the girls.

Sew- I lost 4 of my original shipment of Cochins from Ideal. They sent replacements last week for the chicks that weren't Cochins. So 10 Cochins and 10 BR males. I lost 3 during and right after shipment. The next morning I lost 3 more, and then yesterday morning 4 more. This morning they were fine. Ideal is reshipping the order, on Monday. Again.

And as far as Ideal, I thought it was just me, as I have had the same thing happen with those bantams I got awhile back too. Weird.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

No offense, I know a lot of people like Ideal but I personally think it's Ideal. I got a batch last fall and out of 18 I ended up with 13 and of those only 5 have truly thrived. I was thinking it was the weather and it was the first time I had the chicks outside instead of in the house. But of the the 5 I kept only my pair of Speckled Sussex has truly truly seemed like they are growing. One of the people I sold some of the chicks to says the Brahmas and Cochin I sold him are doing great. One chick never grew past 1 week old and died just after 3 weeks old. I also lost a healthy (or so it seemed) EE at 3 or 4 weeks. I will probably not go there again myself. That is just my opinion. I even gave my chicks gro-gel and Quik chick when I got them. Even if I were to be dissapointed with a breed or color I at least was happy from where I got them, this was beyond not the case with Ideal for me.

My bantam wyandottes came from Ideal and every day I would get up to find another one dead. And I'm talking like a week later I was still finding them dead for no reason.

Hi everyone

I would like to make something perfectly clear right know.

I do not nor have I ever made the claim that any of my birds, including my silkies are of "show quality" although some probably are and some are not. I do not care one way or the other, that is not why I have them. I have them for the simple joy of getting up in the mornings and taking care of them, going out several times a day to spend time with them, and laughing at some of the silly things that they do. I am just posting this because someone is hatching some of my eggs today and they sent me a pm ranting because the chicks did not meet their standards. Again, I never said they were "show quality" and they never said that is all they wanted, if they had I would not have swapped with them. I have 24+ silkie eggs that could have shipped to someone tomorrow but I think I will just feed them back to the flock, they will probably appreciate them more.

Wow - sounds like recently Ideal hasn't been exactly, um, ideal. Glad it's not me. I don't want more males for warmth or I'd re-order to give them another chance. What do you do with the packing peanuts? grow them out and the process them? Cull them?

Personally, I'm more concerned about healthy birds with good production rates than show quality. If I ever decide I care more about looks I certainly won't swap of them. Not that I've ever shown birds but it seems like an expensive hobby. Either go through a lot of cheap birds hoping for SQ or buy spendy eggs from SQ birds.

Hey wait a minute....you mean my beautiful healthy and strong chicks I got 12 of for the price of a small usps box isn't gaurenteed to be a 100 dollar show quality bird? Stop the train....I want my postage back...

By the way, did they look the chick in the mouth?

Quote: Arrgghhh! I haven't been able to find a breeder of Darks, which is what I want! A friend on our state forum has, and will get me a dozen eggs next month. But I would have taken every one you don't need off your hands. All of them.

On the other hand, I have lots of different colors of Orps coming! Some SQ, most not, but they'll be gorgeous anyway! I'll be concentrating on the Orps, but I want a small variety of breeds anyway. All LF.

Orps, both American and English in several different colors. (Brown eggs)
RC Brown Leghorn...and I'd like to find a good breeder of those too, but haven't. (White eggs)
Amers...BBS (Blue eggs)
Wellies (Terra cotta eggs leaning to speckles)
Barnies ? I'm getting some to try, anyway! (Darker egg?)
Cuckoo/blue cuckoo/golden cuckoo marans (Darker egg)

Dark Brahmas??? (Another brown egg!)

Plus EEs and OEs and any girl that strikes my fancy can live in the eating egg pens! (assorted blues and greens) And quail. (small with splotchy speckling)

My first concentration is eating eggs. I have never been able to provide enough eating eggs to my customers. And I want pretty eggs. But I'd like to be able to sell some good quality birds/eggs/chicks down the road, too. Since we are rebuilding the flock, I've gotten to start over with The Plan. It's been interesting deciding.

I opted not to get bantams again. I can't get Silkies or Polish as we free range. Even when I get my breeding pens, the birds will be rotated through from free range.

There's the bare bones of my plan, anyway! If I lose the Brahmas, I do have the orps for brown eggs. I just wanted Brahmas!

Please overlook the babbling...
