Good morning everybody! Outside chickens are happily chowing down, inside chicks have been fed, watered, cages changed, and Zeke has had some play time. So now I get play time, too!

My girls give me pathetic sad eyes if I don't throw them mealworms when I'm collecting eggs. I think their on to me too because most of them hold out on me so I'll come around again...spoiled chickens

This is my second bag already

I think I need to start growing these things

Okay, I for one have found it impossible to train chickens -- although it is possible to convince them to cooperate. But boy they sure do seem able to train us!

i got an electric cig it helps. so does coffee for the nerves or just eat untill you explode

I ADORE my electronic cigarette. Having been using them over a year and a half I can say that my lungs and overall health are way better -- although not perfect by any means; we're still inhaling a foreign substance that sure isn't good for us. It's just less dangerous (and less carcinogenic) than tobacco and the additives in real cigarettes. That said, on quitting smoking:

Sah, the reason cigarettes are so hard is because nicotine not only changes the chemistry of your brain, it changes the actual brain structure, too. It can take half a year for that damage to reverse itself. It's one of the hardest drugs in the world to quit (I haven't; I've simply changed to a somewhat less hazardous source -- same goes for people who chew nicotine gum, etc. These don't do a darn in terms of actually quitting the real addiction, which is not the cigarettes per se but the nicotine in them, which is why people who use nicotine gum/patches/etc have such a horrible relapse rate -- they haven't even touched the real addiction) so be gentle with yourself, and give yourself ALL kinds of credit!!!! How hard is it? Well, I haven't managed it
big_smile.png
And I don't kid myself that my chosen nicotine replacement source is anything like risk-free. My lungs still ache in the mornings when I've been vaping heavily the day before, I have occasional bouts of post-nasal drip and dry throat... I'm less worried about lung cancer, definitely, but I think emphysema is still a real risk. What you're doing is very difficult, and the best possible gift in the world you could give yourself. Keep going!

Wonderful site to keep you on track: whyquit.org (This all falls under the "Those who can't do, cheer from the sidelines" heading)

Things got all messed up this morning with "mines" flying all around. Ninjas were everywhere.

The swap page was stopped for just a few minutes while it was straightened out. Somewhere in one of Madams old posts it was decided that "mines" need to have a number or name with them to prevent confusion. I guess its not new however hasn't really been enforced.

Yeah, it does get crazy. The new rules make a lot of sense :)

Ah what a relaxing day so far at work. The servers are down and there is nothing we can do until they are back up.

Yay! I love it when computers crashing is a good thing!

oK SO i FIGURED OUT WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY NEW INCUBATOR TEMPERATURE. It is 97.9 at egg level and 101 at incubator thermometer level. So do I have to up the temperature so it is 99.5 at egg level? That would mean I have to up it to like 102 right? sorry about the caps

Yep, you want it 99.5 at egg level. This is why I love water wigglers :) especially my homemade ones. I just lay 'em on top of the eggs (being plastic bags, they flatten out nicely). Not only do they give me a very accurate reading at egg level, they kind of act like a broody hen :)

i set 150 eggs last including some VERY well packed Lavender Laced Orpington eggs that arrived this past weekend! Woohooo they looked great cant wait till lockdown with them

Woo-hoo! Wow, that's a lot of eggs :) A very nice guy just brought me four big thick styrofoam shipping coolers yesterday so I can make more incubators. My fridge one is my favorite but until I revamp the inside so I can get three turners in there, I need extras! Plus my two hatching 'bators which seem to be doing well so far :)

My son does indeed have strep, so that pretty much means we all have it... Or at least the baby will get it. Which also means I will be having anxiety attacks for the next week worrying. I just don't handle sickness well. I know its not serious, but it has me crying cuz I get so freaked out.

Blech

Sick is no fun. And strep is scratchy, painful and unpleasant -- I remember. Stock up on sherbet and good movies and games for the kids, take it easy and stay warm!

I am getting creatve this week until a few more eggs hit lockdown. I almost have every cabinet maxed out and we have 4!

oh and I set 20 button quail eggs cause out poor two boys need lady friends lol

LOL! Yeah, what I really want someday is a big multi-drawer one like yours or CPL's (that thing is SERIOUSLY cool! And old -- I love old -- how come they could build an incubator in the 1930s that works better than the ones they mass-produce now? Not counting yours which is a serious bit of work, and absolutely stunning

)

Wish I could have quail but I'm definitely over-straining my neighbors as it is -- plus I may be breaking down and getting goose eggs
tongue.png
Actually, come to think of it, the quail would probably be less intrusive than geese...

I'm just grinning thinking of all the babies you're going to have kicking around! At least till you sell 'em

Morning All!

I am sorry for your troubles but on one up side one would never learn unless there were a few mistakes right

I only say that because reading what you posted has actually in a way helped me. I just got my incubator and it has been running for a week. I had 2 extra thermometers one digital and one the regular kind. The digital one was way off the incubator one and the regular one was same temp. So at first I thought the digital one was off so I just left it at the same. But when I read your post I checked it with another thermometer and that was yet a different temp. Luckily I don't have any eggs in it quite yet but I have some on the way. I don't have ice so couldn't do the test. I tried it with snow but I want to get some ice and try it again, one thermometer said 31 the other 33. The dig. one was reading 97 when the incubator was at 99.5 so I raised the heat up to 101 and it is now reading 99. My digital one also has a hydrogemeter (SP?) and that too was off from the incubator. The hydrogometer kept being above what the incubator said and was always in different increments. It now is only 1 degree off from the incubator hydrogometer and there is no way to adjust it so not sure what is going on. Iwill go back to the store and see if they have any good thermometers I could try.

So in a way your bad experience may have helped me try to avoid a similar one.

I'm glad they helped someone! Better to learn from someone else's mistakes than to make the same one someone else did!
I waterbath can everything. Even all the taboo stuff, like oil, meats and green beans. It works just fine for us.
Even if the USDA is just making a fuss, if the possibility exists that I could kill one of my children, I'm gonna do it the safer way.
I grew up canning, too, and I still find it scary. It can go right for a long time...but it only takes one wrong time to kill people.
EXACTLY.
Sew I'm so sorry

Any luck with the other 2 yet?
No. They're still in the incubator, but I'm pretty sure they're not going to hatch.

I may have enabled my mother - I told her that I'd be happy to bring the incubator up to her house if she wanted to hatch some chicks for me, she could "foster" them for a week or so and then I could bring them home. She was totally for it, but the glare of death I got from my father was hilarious.

LOL! That's excellent

Still, what a wonderful arrangement -- she gets the fun of hatching chicks without having to keep them, you get the fun of having chickens without the heartache that goes with hatching. Your dad'll survive it. Make him an omelet!

is it a still air?

Sah sorry the babies are sick, never any fun

I am going to try that.
