Oh, and anyone have any brilliant ideas for marking baby chicks I have to make sure I keep them all straight. which is going to take all of my zip ties.... and I like to try to guess the gender based on feathering so I need another system for that. I guess I could cool-aid dye all the chicks I suspect of being girls pink. that would be something, wouldn't it? but would interfere with my enjoyment of them I suspect. and what if I guesses wrong...all the other chicks would make fun.

nose rings? ethnic down braiding? toe nail paint?

Ok is it good or bad we just went to a chicken class at our CO OP, we had almost every breed of chicken they talked about and the ones on their slide show. The only ones we did't have were Cochins and Black sex links.

First, you better get on the ball and pick-up some of the Cochins and BSLs! You don't want to get a bad grade in that class.

Second, you are now elected to give the class next time so you can bring in LIVE examples!

If you have round nose pliers or a dowel and regular pliers, a wire cutter and a bunch of colored paperclips you can make your own spiral bands. I did this for my chicks - but you have to watch them and cut them off and make new ones when they get tight.

I put pink on the suspected girl ones...

I have a question on sex-links. I have been reading up on them lately because I am trying to hatch some for a friend. What I have read is that almost any roo (except barred) over barred hens (mine are Barred Rock) will give you sex-links. So DMRippy was nice enough to confirm that my EE roo (Columbian pattern, I think) over my BR would give me sex-links. Those eggs are in the bator now and I am anxiously awaiting that hatch.

Last summer, though, I hatched some BR eggs from the hens that are in with my SFH just to see what I would get. They came out looking very much like SFH, they weren't black and they didn't have spots on their heads even though they were both boys. Why didn't it work? Any ideas?

Pictures!!!!!:celebrate Such great Pictures!!!!!:celebrate

Wow...that makes it so much more real!  I need to remember my camera tomorrow!  Why is this so excitng?

I couldn't sleep so I have gotten up to take an Ambien.  (Countdown to not making any sense starts in T minus 15 minutes and counting.)
I have a bunch of Dorking chicks I just hatched out that I am going to put the chicks you are sending me in with...I wonder if husband will notice:oops:

I am beside myself wondering what the mystery chicks are.  once I have them I am hoping it will be obvious or you will have pity on me and let me know, right?

deep breath.....in.......out......in....out...;...Ow, that was a sneeze.  that hurt.  And now I have little tiny rainbows all over my screen...

You are not making sense, did you say your kids are dorks?

Hmmm mystery chicks. You have a better chance finding out than Snap N Zap, picture BM6 and I standing over breeder, "do, you know what it is?"

although I have no idea what a SFH is based on...I think the roo has to be the colombian based color, there are lots of articles online explaining how the sex linking works....I do know that to get black sexlink the hen has to be barred,,,to get red sexlink the hen has to carry the silver gene...and the roos suggested for sexlinked chicks are mainly RIR and NH, so I guess whatever their base pattern is, which I am pretty sure I read was colombian

This is what I was reading: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261208/sex-linked-information
If you scroll down to the section on black sex-links and then the questions:

Q 7 Are there other varieties of males, not in the table, that can be used to make black sex linked crosses?

A. Yes In making a black sex linked cross, almost any variety of male ( white or barred should not be used) can be crossed with a purebred barred hen to produce black sex linked chicks. The barred female must come from the black sex linked table or have the correct genotype.

It really only says that white and barred males won't work. Just about anything else should. Am I reading it wrong?

Question for everyone, do you think it is acceptable for a seller to sell very small pullet eggs for hatching? I paid 40.00 for eggs plus shipping and the majority of the eggs are small pullet eggs. After reading the ad I do see it said hen/pullet. I just don't think it is ethical to do that, wait until your eggs are decent for hatching especially since they are being shipped all the way across the country.

What do y'all think?

Well, I know I got upset when I got pullet eggs after paying a pretty penny for them, but quite honestly it was one of my best hatches on shipped eggs and all the chicks did well and don't seem any the worse for wear. They are about 1.5 YO now and doing great. As long as they are fertile, I don't really think it makes a difference.
