Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I just set my first bourbon red turkey eggs this weekend- 24 of them!  Any tips or advice?  I want to free range them and keep them in a fenced area.

Clip their flight wings once they start to fly. They are really amazing fliers. I do both sides because I had a hen that only had one and she could still easily clear a 5-6' fence. Tey probably still can but they're happy and seems to be more effort than staying with their flock. Not everyone does but it works for us.

Anyone want some black breese?

I have 2 juvenile pairs that will be ready to ship in 30-60 days and will be 3 months old. GFF is asking $99 a day old unsexed chick.

I will sell the juvie pairs for $150 plus shipping shipping will be actual cost of postage $20-$40 depending on location and will take payments if you put a deposit to hold them.

PM me

We totally free range with them once the jump the fence. If you want to keep them in then as Aye said clip their wings.

I do keep a pen set up for when we are going to be gone over the summer when we have juvenile delinquents running amok. Otherwise you never know where they will go looking for peoples to see. They seem to know that leaving the penned yard is BAD when mom as says NO! Well that is after they tried it once or twice and got scolded for being naughty. I've raised turkeys most of my adult life and was around them and played with them as a child and growing up. We had chickens too, but turkeys were just so much more fun. If I could only have one type of bird hands down it would be turkeys. Course I wouldn't tell about the parrots I had in the house.

Hatching is just like chicks for me anyway. They do require a warm brooder. I start at 95 and drop as needed, but don't push too fast. They take longer to fully feather. I keep ours off soil unless its very dry until they are 6 to 8 weeks and then it's only short periods. Some people say 12 to 13 weeks. It's whatever works for you and the Turks. I always get them into any available sunshine. I've moved brooders so they can lay in the sun. They seem to love it. Always have a way for them to get out of the sun too though. Keep them totally away from drafts and damp. Those two things have taken out most turkeys being raised by inexperienced people.

Game bird starter, game bird grower, and then turkey duck goose is what I feed. It depends on what you have in your area, but game bird starter has the higher protein the little buggers need.

I strongly suggest hands on if you want them to be friendly. Think turkey hugs. The down side to that is they become NEEDY. I love that about them to me it's a plus. They are like little feathered children that don't grow up but also don't need to to totally take care of them.

I bow to others with their expertise now.

Does anyone have a cure for a nasty mean billy goat that has horns. I tell you i have had it with him. I bottle fed him and he is just down right mean. He horns me & rears up at me and my kids. Last night was the last straw though. I got him off his chain and connected him to his lead rope. As soon as i did that he blasted me in the knee cap with his horns and knocked me clean off my feet. Then he started attacking me horning me anywhere he could. Honestly i am ready to take him to have him processed. I don't do mean animals nor do i sell them to people. I know it sounds harsh but if anyone has a better solution i am open to op's. I have already tried to band his horns he keeps breaking them. Hubby won't let me have someone cut them off nor can i find anyone local to do it. He is my breeder so not wanting him to be a weather. Just out of options. I'm afraid he is going to hurt my kids. I can't even let them in the goat stall

Grrr.... Darn spell correct.
We had an especially aggressive doe who had horns and we banded her too, we ended up having to put multiple bands on at one time because she too would break them. We put up to four bands at one time on one horn. It really did work after a little bit, also the horns will grow back in flat instead of the pointed ones. Most of the ones that were aggressive and mean got eaten but Cleo our doe was our sweetheart and we didn't want to lose her-she was more aggressive towards other goats than us. But it really did work once we got the bands to stay on. I would say if you don't want or can't replace him to just keep trying with the banding. Really the only other option is to put him down, canes and sprays tend to only be short term solutions. Can he get a long with a weather? We ended up having to take our weathers OUT of our buck pen because oune of our bucks- while a sweetheart to us- was just not very nice to the weathers but our other buck was fine with the weathers.

By the way my Harvey girl, my one eyed midget, hatched out four of her eggs over the weekend and would have had five but the last one got stuck while I was away. She sat 5 eggs total. What a good little small batch I curator she turned out to be. I can sit here and listen to her singing away to her babies. I'm so happy for her I could just burst! She had a tough life getting half her face tore loose, so it's wonderful to be able to see her so happy being momma.

I don't have any other males but I can easily get another male that isn't a problem at all. My big problem is he isn't little and isn't done growing yet. He isn't a pygmy he is a Alpine (dairy goat) he is gonna get a little over 200lbs. Right now he is an easy 60lbs maybe a little bigger. If he knocked me down at that weight I would hate to see what damage he could do once full grown. He isn't playing he is being down right mean. I have a pygmy girls who has her horns and she is a sweet heart if she horns at all it is playing. There is a big differance between the 2 of them and using there horns. I have put 2 bands on at once but it hasn't even put a dent in his horns. Hubby even helped me put a notch in them and it still hasn't worked.

I just started a Garden/seed swap. Here is the link, please let me know if anything is missing/incorrect/unclear.

Quote: get a big boar weather to put in with him so he has someone to butt heads with and be a boy with. As mentioned above, band and use multiples if needed to get them to stay put. I have bull dogged our billy to the ground and held him there on his over the top naughty days. I also am a fan of lead rope teathering, keeps them from rearing up and getting their head up to ramp with. One lead rope around their body like a girth on a saddle with a second lead rope going from the first to a halter they are wearing. You only use it when working around them so they dont hung up on anything, but teaches them manors too.

Good luck naughty boys are hard to handle when they get set in their ways
