Pyracantha aka "Firethorn" does have long, sharp thorns all over it. They are very pretty shrubs, though.

LOL That sent me on a search. Found some seeds on ebay too. As well as some other chicken friendly flowering things!

I didn't realize chickens could eat it!!!! I am wanting to do more "chicken gardening"!

At some point I hope to make a sitting area between to two larger barns with a small to medium chicken garden.

I would say no. If you have birds in quarantine that are carriers you will only know that if you put a non-carrier bird in with them. Basically sacrificing one of your birds for the better of your flock.

Yes. With the GFF birds, they all come from the same lines. However, even though they come from a small gene pool, if you are breeding siblings to each other, you are making the gene pool even smaller. That's why I'm trying to get my birds from different sources. At least then, there is a chance it is cousins or somewhat unrelated birds versus brothers and sisters. It is a small enough gene pool anyway.

Actually, they have/had multiple roosters with their breeds. As Jenny said, they don't inbreed so you really don't know the genes you are getting.

Cedar trees grow quickly, but are very prickly on your feet. I have Cedars along my property between the yard and the field which is planted. I'm rethinking it now that they're getting older and I walk outside barefoot. If I did it again, I'd probably use Norway Spruce. Grows just about as quickly and is a nicer tree. However, Cedars might be just perfect for what you want and I'm not sure that you'll be barefoot walking in the chicken yard. lol...

I would also stay away from the Wisteria. That stuff gets out of control quickly and I've seen it rip the siding and roofing off of things. Very pretty when managed, but very destructive if left unchecked.

Leyland cyprus make wonderful natural fences. They grow extremely fast and very tall. We have them bordering 2 sides of our property. The one side, the Leylands are taller then the neighbors house.

I have a question for y'all. As a rule, I have never added anything but day old chicks to my flock for biosecurity reasons. But, I have an opportunity to pick up three RB hens from the breeder I got mine from for a good price. When you do isolation how far away do you keep the newcomers from the others? How do you work isolation? When/how would you put them with my Tom?

They go on our porch (front) or in the garage, often in the garage as it is easiest to care for them and not track outside to the other flocks

30 days to start some as long as 60 days

we have a few EE girls and an extra roo we keep as testers and are the first to be put with the new birds to see if they develop anything. We rarely if ever buy adult chicken stock

I'm not getting my birds directly from GFF and I think that was the point they were making too. They are getting their breeds from here, not multiple sources. So, they would be breeding brothers and sisters if they got them all from the same person on here. I was saying that if you get them from several sources (not directly from GFF), then your chances of getting unrelated birds are better.

But again, that doesn't make sense either. If 5 people get the same breed from GFF that comes from one flock, they are all related. There is no chance of getting unrelated birds from anyone that has them unless someone else imports the same breed from a different overseas breeder.

What about the guy who is crossing in SS to the Jub Orpingtons, and the Buff Orp's into the Chocolates. At some point he will have an unrelated line. They will have out crossing, but if he does it right, I can see where he will still have nice birds.
