I'm getting a pair of blue D'Anvers this week!!!!

Thanks for identifing my indignant chicken. I did not take the time to find the shell because I had pips in the incubator and I did not want to shrink wrap them!!! I am not much of a drinker....but something definetaly gave me "fuzzy math" on hatch dates.

Speaking of Legbars... I hatched one little CCL this weekend. Legbar experts: is this a female with a headspot, or a darker male.... Out of CPL's eggs...

That is a male. He is grey, females are dark brown and black. Also, he has a large spot of white and no eyeliner. I still would not breed him though-you want a male that is light in color, while females should be very dark brown with distinctive lighter or chestnut strips, and a dark "eyeliner" running back from her eyes. If he is the only male, use him, but keep us posted as he grows.
Quote: Rhodebars are red-he also looks like a Jaerhon female.
Quote: I am almost 100% sure it is a male, however, he is a lot darker than he should be.

This is what a Cream Legbar chick should look like-female on left/male on right.

See the grey on the male? Unfortunately, the Legbars we have here in the US are not nearly as correct as they should be, which is why we are getting very dark males. We have to work with what is available, though. This picture is from Emily Degray in the UK. She has some of the top Legbars in the world.

On the topic of poor hatch rates from shipped birds...I've had th esame. Some were just infertile, but others have developed and never pipped. I did a bit of research, and found that shipped eggs seem to have a somewhat stretched membrane, which allows chicks to get bigger, and interferes with their ability to hatch. Next batch due, I'm going to babysit them, and consider poking air holes through the shell. Maybe even through the membrane. I'll have to think on that, as to how far to interfere.

I also have duck eggs incubating for Pysankigirl. Three of them are developing normally, while the other three are developing weirdly. Two have the air cell on the wrong end, while the third has it on the side. If they continue development, all three will need help. I'm assuming that the aircells slipped during shipping. They did sit for a day before going into the incubator. I had one of my barnies with a side air cell, too.

I think the USPS does play hockey with them. We need to find...or create...an alternative shipping service. How many of us travel?

I am turning by hand, but 2 times is about all I can do a day. I make sure they are in a different position every night, forward, backwards or middle (Flat). It is just easier than fixing the turner right now. Not bad either. They are hatching just fine too.
