What does X-raying do to the eggs?  I have always wondered why it was bad because we get it done to ourselves!

But when you get xrays or are working for the hospital, they ask if you have any chance of being pregnant. If so, they won't allow you around it. Embryos and fetuses and the like are more susceptible to the xrays.

I have no proof and have never tested it (like send two packages of the same eggs to the same person, one with the stick please don't xray the other with a stick that's PLEASE X-ray :p)
This is what I think. X-raying kills the fertility. The two shipments that I received I had no development. Packing was good, airsacs where good. It could be the rooster was infertile or tey where xrayed. Sice the shipper told me they where hatching chicks at home, I have no reason to not trust that, since they sent a free replacement...seems like they wouldn't have wasted shipping money if they questioned the fertility. Since that is the only time I have had zero development, I am inclined to believe somewhere on the trip down there is a facility that X-rays. Not a scientifically proven theory, but good enough for me!

Well, I have some bad news. I've had some major issues with my chickens lately. I've thought long and hard about this. As soon as the chickens I have now have lived full lives, I will not be getting anymore. On my last hatches from shipped eggs, I got one chick out of over three dozen eggs and this one was SUPPOSED to be a Rhodebar, but it is yellow with two black spots. I had a great hatch out of my own pilgrim goose eggs, so I know it's not that. It just has something to do with shipped eggs that don't do well for me. Then, a few nights ago, a raccoon literally ate a hole through our fencing and killed every single Rhodebar I bought from madamwlf and then last night something ate through the brooder at the other end of our property and killed some of my chicks from CPL. I'm just done. We've killed at least 40-50 raccoons and possums in the last two years and they still kill everything. Nature wins this one. Thanks to all of you for being so supportive! Once my spring claims come in and the hatches are done, I will not be getting anymore chickens. I'll fulfill the orders I have out, but then I'm done.
So sorry to hear about your losses.

I am thankful everyday that the coons and the possums do not get to my chickens. We used to see quite a few of them here, but since we got a mini donkey, I think they have decided it is safer to hunt elsewhere. Must be the scent or something, because only a few of the chickens are actually within the pasture fence. Mini donkeys do not like strangers of any kind in their territory - my kids have even seen her chasing away a hawk. I also have the electric poultry netting around a couple of the coops. Last summer, many of the birds had just flimsy cages to roost in at night that wouldn't have kept out a newborn kitten, but the electric fence kept every ground predator away. WELL worth the investment. Just a couple of things to think about when the pain eases up a bit.

As some of you may know, my DH comes home today!!!!

That means I probably won't be on much for the next few weeks as we try to get things done around here. It's not really as bad as you would think. Most of it is normal Spring chores but with his job, we just never know when he'll be gone again.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. Don't give up!

Xrays will and does kill the embryo in eggs I think the next ones I send out I am going to wrap them in aluminum foil, They say it will stop the xray from killing the embryos, something to try and see if it helps
