You can take a pretty good guess at sexing fairly early on. All of your turkeys should have a small bump on their head. It is called a snood. If the bird is female, it will stay pretty small and stand kind of upright on her head. If it is is male, it will grow longer and longer as he ages and hang down one side of his face. So, a bump is a happy and healthy turkey!! Sometimes, they are harder to see when they hatch....this usually means a little hen. If you have more than one turkey, compare the bumps on their heads and the boys are often larger and fatter. The male will usually be larger and may strutt, but my little hens have done that as well at a young age. Send a picture!!! One of us can probably guess based on age.
Thank you! I'll see what I can do. Little one loves to whistle, I can tell you that. Is that a good or bad noise?

I have to agree with you.  My Calico Cochin Bantams that are in grow out are absolutely beautiful.  My one little Olandsk is also in there and gets lost.  LOL  I have to look for smallest and no feathers on the feet to be able to find her (hopefully.)

Would one of you turkey enthusiasts answer a couple of questions for me?

How soon can you sex them and what is the first obvious difference?  My Lilac Turkey has a small bump like a wart on the face above the beak and has had since birth.  Is this normal, or something to be concerned about?  Thanks

Yup it's a snood! The whistling is normal. Whistle that little tune back. They like that. Your little one is just calling for momma, and YOU are momma. Im always sad when they start arking instead of whistling. it means my babies are growing up. Both boys and girls will strut, but the ones thar hold it for longer periods are the boys. Nothing is cuter than a couple day old turkeys strutting in fuzz. Post that pic! Well guess, but I can only guarantee we will be right 50% of the time.

It means they loooooovvvvvvveeeeeee you!!!!! Lucky you! You are mama and they are calling and looking for you. They can be demanding little monsters, but they sure are cute. You can tell, because they usually stop the minute you pick them up, just like a fussy baby.

Oh, turkey lessons! Just in time! This is all great to know! I will be setting turkey eggs next week. -sigh- And the flock and specie numbers just keep growing.

Side swap and swap #9446 (claimed in #9477) to be cleared! DC# 9114901075742385075660

Why does it seem like there isn't enough time in the day to get things done? I go back to work next week, and I swear, instead of my "to do" list getting shorter, it gets longer and the day just keeps shortening....Sorry had to vent.

They grow up and get tough....at the least the boys. But I learned last night that I still mama to my big boy. I wasn't sure because he spends his days being the big man on campus. When I got home from work, my roommates had him on a work table in the basement. He had cut up his foot pretty bad and they were trying to wrangle him and fix him up. The minute he saw me he ran to the end of the table and crawled into my arms just like when he was a baby and tucked his big giant tom head into my shirt like he used to do. It was heartbreakingly cute. Of course, after the cuddling, he pecked on the cheek to express his extreme displeasure and frustration, but it made me happy anyway.

BTW: I have noticed with my Midgets that a couple don't have identifiable snoods.....I am used to the prominent snood of my RB, are they smaller or take longer to grow?

Ok...I have been sorting through all of my swaps and trades just to make sure I am on the "up and up" with everyone. I think I have everything I owe either sent or listed on my swap page as owed. I also think I have either sent out all my turkey eggs for this year or made other arrangements when they stopped laying. If, for some reason, I have not. please, please PM so we can work something out. Also, if I owe you items, I would really appreciate it if you would take a moment and check to see if what I have listed is correct.

I am still working on my bookkeeping......

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

When I followed the Australian Mystery Egg thread, lots of waterfowl people gave advice on leaving duck eggs strictly alone and not helping, saying that even after pipping, they could take another day or even two. I have pysankigirl's ducks working on it. One has been pipped for a while, but hasn't started zipping. How long do I leave it alone?

Enjoy your day!

Three days start to finish is normal

Seeing how not ALL packages go through the NE, and live birds hub in Memphis USPS has no reason to use the bombs as an excuse. Severe weather and things like the recent bombs are only excuses for delays in that market area, not the entire country.
Thanks for the duck advice. I was hoping you'd chime in! I will leave them alone.

I am going to go ahead and say I am sorry to those of you I owe orp eggs to- my hens are broody and the ones that are not broody are not laying very well. I was hoping to fill orders sooner than promised but, its looking like I am behind again. I am sending out everything I get to fulfill swaps so just bare with me.
