But it could be good for a laugh if the recipient opened their box and found a bunch of eggs, each wearing its own little "anti-alien/x-ray" tin foil hat.

I haven't done any research on this yet, but someone on another thread swore by it. It's just an experiment out of curiosity, but I'll actually do some digging when I find the time.

I like the cardboard ones too - because I can use them to absorb moisture and keep the humidity up right around the eggs - an not in the rest of the incubator.

Do you use the big flats? Have you ever used the egg carton ones? I think the flats have more air room than the cartons.. I hatched bantam eggs in the cartons but I am hesitating doing the larger eggs in there - they fit a bit tight and I am concerned about air flow.

I have heard some people use the styro ones - but they cut the bottoms off so the egg just rests in them - not really sitting down in the bottom. They said it was to let the chicks hatch - but all my bantam chicks made it out of the un-cut cardboard egg cartons just fine - I really liked that they couldn't kick over the other eggs when they were getting out.

That was my concern was the eggs breathing and the air circulating around them. I guess I will be seeing if I have a tray available out of the hatcher... I don't have any cardboard flat things, just one egg carton that is cardboard.

Not exactly.  The SBEL are normally made with Americauna and don't breed true.  The Arkansas Blue has been bred through enough generations that it isn't a hybrid.  It breeds true and you get blue egg laying BBS colored pea-combed chickens.  It started with commercial leghorns and Araucana.  There won't be any beards or muffs.

Good evening! I've made it home and checked everyone out. Hubby did a pretty fair job of taking care of everyone. A few things I shook my head at, but overall, not too shabby.

Didn't turn the tunes on or listen to an audio book the whole trip. I did some thinking instead. I'll be taking some birds up to the auction soon, and narrowing down my breeds just a tad. Gotta make room for more orps in the fall!

I have a question about hatching in egg cartons. I have used this with my, so far, two successful hatches. The first one, I had the egg carton upright. It seemed like a huge struggle for those poor chicks to get out. The second, I had the egg carton on its side, and this seemed to work well for them, but they had great air cells. The current set that I have incubating, all of the air cells are in tact, but some are a little wonky...elongated, not round, partially on the side. Has anyone had better luck standing this type of egg up in the carton as opposed to the side?

I should mention, I am cutting up your standard dozen egg card board containers. I cut the bottoms out and the top off then cut the number of holders I need (2, 4, 6...)

I have chicks hatching today. All shipped. I have them upright in the cut up eggcartons. The eggs that had nice aircells have already hatched or are currently pipping or zipping. I have three eggs that had horrible huge saddle aircell.... Not a pip wobble or anything yet.... But if they are going to make it will be becuase the eggs are leaning yet upright in the correct way for them to have turned to get ready to pip in a good spot.

We became Rock Pillar Ranch since we're on Rock Pillar Rd. Boring, but it will make us easy for people to find us down the line. We have rock pillars at the beginning of the road, but we want to build a pair on the driveway too. Rocks are a but pricy, so we need to go a hunting!

We have a few rocks at our place if you want to come over and visit Lava Ridge Farm!!!

If you didnt get a message that they needed you to contact them you are good. I had to email back and forth with design and they got it ready today and then issued me an invoice today to pay.

Got an email from them. They couldn't do my whole logo but they got part of it so that's good.

Ok...so I am going to write a book, "adentures in absurdity: how chickens took over my relatively sane suburban life". Here is one story for the book.

A women contacted me who really, really wanted a roo. She lives in wisconsin. Well my work is closer toher than my home, I agreed to meet her before work with s chick. Well, we agreed we would do this today before class. SSomehow the signals got crossed and she did not appear for her chick. Now I have a little chick, no light and I have to go to class. So I try to sneak into the building and ran right into the campus director who promptly said "kristie, are you chirping?" By now I am late, so as I am runnibg I muble something incherent about a mistake before class. So I get class, of course today of all days, accreditors are visiting. I think, ok....I just have to keep a low profile. So here are my students, keeping the chick warm while I am teaching. Because this is my luckiest day ever, my class comes up randomly to be observed by both the accrediting team and the director. God love my students. Now in addition to keeping the chick warm, they are now hiding him under the table teying desperately not to get "caught" with the bird under the table and my campus director gives me a very distinct look that I interpreted with only little humor, "so kristie, whatcha gonna do now"? Though, my students were increfibly good at hiding the little roo and keeping him happy, I also knew the lady I wss giving him to was about to show up in the middle of class so I had to very delicately explain the unusual mess. It is a good thing they had a sense of humor. Not one of my proudest professional moments!

That story was just what I needed! Lol
