Luckily I have my chicks with colored leg bands to identify the bielefelders and Rhodebars. I hope I don't mess up on setting those two in the incubator together. They look very similar!


I think a lot of us on here are halting on the swap thread because we are waiting to have eggs/fertility. I would be trading a lot but, I don't want to get overwhelmed. --- for those I owe orps to.... still waiting on my chocolate girls to resume their business. I will have lavender and lemon cuckoo's if anyone wants me to start saving them and omit the chocolates.

I don't know what some of them are? I know there is Toulbunt, Legbars, Orloffs, Rhodebars and not sure what the smaller ones are?

This is way off the current thread discussion, but I need some advice.  I have 3 Sicilian Buttercup Bantams which according to breed info are not supposed to go broody.  I came back from MN to two of the three co-brooding in one nesting box.  The other one was faithfully laying her egg with the other two, and I removed it each night after I gave the two broodies eggs to set.  Last night, my third decided she is going to join the flock.  I now have all three setting in one box on maybe 10 eggs between them.  The eggs are due to hatch next Tuesday.  How do I work this?  Will they share chicks, will the one that just started setting continue to set? 

I've never had broody hens before.  I have never seen the original two ever get off the eggs and neither has my DH.  They must be running down quickly to get food and water and then right back up.

Should I move all three of them into a separate area as they are in an elevated coop with a hole in the floor, or should I just move feed and water up and block the hole in the floor temporarily?  My poor SBB cockerel tried to move into the layer coop last night.  He is feeling terribly neglected and in need of henly companionship.  LOL

I've had girls co-brood together, and for the most part they did awesome. Eventually one wandered off one day and got locked out. Once they leave they are done. My best was Lucy, our dark Cornish serial brooder and Sandy, a Buff Minorca (which by he way are supposed to be non broody also but all three have taken turns being momma), they would share eggs and put bedding on each other. It was really cute. When the chicks hatched Sandy got up and tended the fuzz balls while Lucy gathered up the rest of the eggs and finished the hatch. They co parented really well together. But outside of the brooding they do not seem to like each other and each has a different rooster.

We have had a lot of Brodie's in breeds that are not supposed to go broody. We've even had a white leghorn go broody. Of course we encourage it if one appears to be thinking about it. We LOVE broodies.
