Sigh. I found my sweet little 4 week old Frizzle Tolbunt dead in the sick room last night.

I though everyone was doing better, they didn't seem as puffy feathered. He wasn't even the sickest looking of the bunch. Krafty's BBS Amer and my Russian Orloff are in there too.... I haven't been out yet this AM and I'm afraid to look.

Anyone got any other ideas/hints for getting through Cocci? I am using the Sulfamaxitone (sp?) at the severe dosage in the water.

When I get this batch better, would you all recommend treating the dirt in that pen or I can put a floor in and get the next batch off the dirt. What's better? I now have my current 1 week chicks in the house on medicated to help the next situation, the ones out on the Sulfa are on regular chicks feed.

I think my issue was they went out earlier, 3 weeks, than the first group, 5 weeks, who was in there, that batch never had an issue, and I ran out of chick starter for a couple days and put them on all poultry crumbles that have no probiotics, maybe that was just enough for the Cocci to take hold.
I'm not sure what you are using to treat them but I use Corid. If I have some that look bad, I give them a small dose straight in their beak. If they are really sick you can not be sure they are drinking the water to get the medicine. You can put sand down. That's what we did for the silkies we had. I don't use medicated feed at all. It usually pops up around here when it rains alot.

I am sorry about your Frizzle Tolblunt chick. It is hard to loose them. Is your Sulfamaxitone? Sulmet?

There are differing schools of thought on the cocci treatments. Some people say to expose the chicks as early as possible (like three days old) and do not feed medicated feed so they can use their natural immunities from birth to deal with it. My mother has mostly broodies raising her chicks, outside, on the ground - she never had Cocci. I have started putting a plug of dirt/grass from where my chickens are in with the chicks when I put them in the brooder and so far it has worked. I know I have Cocci at my place, and the babies I started with the grass show no signs of it - now 9 weeks old. I have Sulmet and Corid just in case though. I have found this information from old time breeders on here - and they say it works. The medicated feed blocks niacin absorption, and can cause curled toes and other muscle problems in chicks susceptible to them (SFH come to mind).

The other school is keep them on medicated feed, keep the brooders spotless and let them grow up before they are exposed. I don't like that because adult birds can die with Cocci too.. if they get an overload.

Oh, another thing I did just start that might make a big difference - I have been feeding the chicks Fermented Feed with ACV in it. The vinegar may make it harder for the Cocci to survive.

My batch of chicks last year (from a hatchery) I went the medicated feed, clean the brooder, stay inside safe, etc route - and they all got Cocci about 5 weeks and I lost 3

I hope the rest of your chicks get better, its really hard to loose them.

I had an issue with Cocci last year that was so bad I thought I would scream. I used a combo of two things. Tetroxy (b/c I always keep it on hand. It's cheap) and crushed garlic and red pepper heated up in olive oil. I mixed the oil into the non medicated chick starter/grower, and within an hour they perked right up. No more losses and they all pulled out of it with great success. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. The next day I gave ACV in the water.

Sounds like someone took a box of goslings home with them.

I told my hub to let memphis know they have until 2 pm my time to find them or I am calling the Memphis news channels to tell them about the mail theft of expensive birds shipping through there. As well as the admitance of birds sitting for 2 days or more being bounced off of flights to give dry ice priority.
