Everyone,

I am going to be running the "Secret Santa" for the Paypal/Hatching Egg Swap. Anyone that wants to participate and has ideas on how we should do it, please PM me. I have some ideas but as a newbie, I don't want to just dive in and look like I am trying to take over.

I was thinking we could handle it one of two ways, we can either do it kind of like a mystery swap where we could have categories of what we would like to have and what we can donate, or we could set a $$ limit and have each person give some personal information which would make creating a gift for that person easier. Obviously if you want hatching eggs that would need to be listed as something that you would want, and I would then try to match up with someone willing to send eggs in a geographical area where the weather conditions won't be as much of an issue.

Just send me your ideas and let me know what you want. I will then be more than happy to try to fulfill your wishes. Just think of me as the Christmas Genie. (However you don't want to picture me that way. WAAAY too old for that image to need to be in anyone's mind.)

Yeah, that would be me, too... I'm still trying to figure out how to have my eggs shipped in the spring and stagger all the hatches...sheesh!

Woa that was weird sorry! I was trying to say...I don't know if you have multiple bators, but the easiest way is to have one or two bators for incubating and a third for hatching, I have three that I run as incubators and one used as a hatcher. That way I can just transfer eggs going into lockdown into the hatcher and everything else can be in different stages in the other bators. Or I think if you have a cabinet model you can have staggered hatches all in one setup, but I have never used one so I'm not quite sure on the details...

I think that is a great idea! Especially for those of us in the most northern climates. In about a month, it is probably going to be too cold for me to get eggs anymore until spring. After all, it probably wouldn't be too healthy for the eggs to come in freezing temperatures and arrive as popsicles. lol...

LOL! Tell me about it. I'd already sworn no more chickens till spring before I stumbled onto the swap thread :)

I am starting to get to the point of asking myself what my chicken-raising goals are, though -- has anyone else gone through that? You must have :) I've got mooooore than enough chickens to provide all the eggs I need (still working on breeds to give me a decent winter supply, though). I've got a couple small breeder projects, nothing very ambitious or anything. Mostly what I have is the potential for a HUGE mutt gene pool, and since my chickens are going to need to start defraying the expense of keeping them pretty quickly, I need to rethink my approach a bit!

On the other hand, I'm really still in the experiment stage, trying different breeds, seeing which ones I like... I'm sure eventually I'll pare it down, eat some of my 'mistakes' :) and get a little more focused about it all. Of course, in the meantime I just got some seramas. Because filling the barn wasn't enough... LOL!

I'm in an unusual position - I'm building a Tiny Home (on hold for the monsoon season here, ARGH!), and in the meantime living in a space that measures about 10' by 12'...along with the aforementioned chicks, 2 cats and the occasional baby rabbit. I had the older babies outside, but the moisture was really hard on them so I brought them back inside. The framing of the house went slowly, so I'm stuck here for another winter. What I really need is better coops and pens! Rain here can go up, down and sideways.
