Cute!

On that note I will just ask.... should I put my WL with my Wheaten Ams???? I haven't because.....

Wheatens are not the BEST layers but ok. Anybody made that cross?
I put my SBEL in with my wheaten ams, they're POL, so I'm really curious how their chicks will turn out, also... BTW... the pullet that I have from you which a friend of mine hatched out looks like she should start laying anytime....

Since my Blue Copper Marans Roo DIED suddenly yesterday, I am going to be doing some moving and I am thinking of moving the Wheatens and Lavs where I can put them under lights SINCE they are either pullets or out of molt and the same holds true for the WL that are NOT laying, so I think I will move them up front.... after we do some work on the pens.

I was just thinking today that if I could figure out a way to keep the eggs dry enough I would put them up here. The more I build up the laying corners the more they seem to dig to lay. With the constant rain and sometimes even more-than-rain

it seems to be a losing battle. I don't have any trouble hatching them here but I haven't come to terms with shipping cold, soaked eggs....... but if you wanted to give it a try.

But......you can milk any sheep, although you don't get the quantity you would get with one bred for it. I never noticed any remarkable difference between Icelandics and any other wool breed sheep as far as udder size. In fact, my Romneys and Cotswolds had much better success raising multiples. And of course, they are all edible. (And tasty!) I quit raising sheep two or three years ago. Now I get all the surplus ram lambs I can get in the spring, and they go to freezer camp in December. All my wool is lamb's wool, I have a waiting list for lambs... and I can't milk anymore, so it became irrelevant.

When an animal is dual-purpose, they are rarely exceptional at anything, but are "good enough" at several. So choose what your highest priority is...wool, meat, milk...and go from there. I ended up running assorted breeds and blending them for wool texture differences, as the wool is the reason I switched from dairy goats to sheep to start with. Wool keeps sooooo much better than milk!

Probably more than you wanted from me, but it's early and my filters are turned off...

Oh, my wonderful secret Santa also sent the BEST oven mitt with a big ol' handsome rooster on it! Guess what I'm using for all my holiday baking?

I wanted to include pics of the main roo's but printer wouldn't work..hope the eggs all made it, that box got filled up quickly.....most of what i have been hatching lately seem to be from these 2

Here in northwest central fl (not really sure what you call the area I live in) I woke up with ice in my waterers and a frost on the ground. It is pretty early for it to be icing up here, but I am sure glad I hadn't put out some of my younger chicks. I planned to this weekend. My brooder is getting kind of cramped for them. I am glad my garden only has cool weather plants in it right now!

I love reading about these different animals... But it makes me want some so bad!! I would really like to become more self sustaining... I am already planning to expand my garden to other crops for the animals and making flour and stuff like that, my soil is very poor, so it takes a lot of amendments to really get good quality growth. Any of you floridians have that problem?

I went to bed not too long after posting on the PP/HES. got up late. still sick and coughing most of the night. trying to settle down into the lungs.
