Hatching in Classrooms

Pics
Pretty much every year we find a box on the porch full of classroom chicks that have been abandoned. Of course they are usually cockerels...

People seem to think that if you have some chickens, you can just add some more without any trouble.

Awww...that's so sad

People should have a plan for their chicks BEFORE they hatch in the classroom!

Fortunately I have family and friends that want chicks I hatch every year! So I find out what people want...as well as I want of course...and that is what I hatch

I take home all the chicks we hatch. I let them grow to 14-20 weeks and sell the pullets and eat the cockerels. The kids take a field trip to the farm to see them grown before I sell them/eat them.

It was really hard when someone left two beautiful crested curly feathered gold bantams. I couldn't introduce them with my turkeys or my layer flock. They all treated them as foreigners. I was fortunate to find them a home before they got killed.

Good for both of you!

I love my bantams. The white leghorn roos will be dinner in about 15 weeks. The rest will just be my new egg making buddies. I dont think i could eat a bantam roo, they are just too cute!

Update:
Day 21 (Easter day) came & went with nothing.
Day 22 pips & chicks. All 6 hatched!

Let's play find the chicks:

Tomorrow I go into my son's preschool to set some eggs for them. Meanwhile my daughter's 4H project is going well. By next week, hers will be here too!

Make sure you report it to the Easter Hatchalong if you entered, I think my guess in the contest was a bit to optimistic so I need all the help I can get! :)
