Hatching with 2 broodies

Hi 846,
I had put up a barrier so the other hens could not get in with her. Thats what I thought in the beginning, that the other hens were coming in and breaking the eggs, but it was just Penny in there sitting on the eggs. I wonder if they will sometimes get rid of the eggs if they are not fertile. I did see her one time gently tapping on one of the eggs. Kind of like she was trying to hear something inside?
Thanks,
Marie
They do that. it does seem like sometimes they know the good eggs from the bad.

Hi everyone,
Got a pix of Penny and one her babies. Check out the size of Penny, the chick is a week old.
Penny is a big girl. Love the chick :)

Hi everyone! Super busy day today, and I see there are a ton of new posts to catch up on! :D

@MistyMountain Looking forward to seeing your arrivals! And I am actually considering getting a baby monitor for the next hatch now... I tend to wake up in the middle of the night worrying and imagining the worst, guess that makes me OCD as well... But thanks for the idea!

@Lesa Mae I was going to pick a favorite Sara but I can't, they are all adorable! (Kidding, I wasn't even going to try.) I think blurry pics make up 90% of mine as well, it's almost impossible to catch them still! I only manage it when I have half an hour or so to click away.

@tommysgirl So glad to have someone I can ask about genetics stuff and get a clear answer! Are/were you a teacher? I may have missed that bit if it was mentioned before. If yes, wish you had been my biology teacher, maybe I would have actually learned something then! :)

I love your new girls! Yes, they look like crosses to me too, though wouldn't know if Cochin or something else.. It would be hard to tell if second generation and crossed back to silkie, and by the amount of silkie feathering, I don't think it's first generation cross. Are they bigger than pure silkies sizewise? Just curious... My grey baby should be silkie-Cochin cross, guess we will see how that turns out in a few months.

And thanks for the compliments on my babies, I love the variety too and can't get enough of watching them. But yours beat mine at the stare at the camera contest! That photo is too cute!!! Well, all of them are, really. I will be stalking all your pictures and comparing feather growth and patterns etc. and taking notes. :D

@Teila Thank you for the compliments as well! I swear they keep transforming overnight, and not only in size and feather growth, but also trusting me more - I have the co-parents to thank for that. :) And that look straight at the camera/phone is exactly like Cenere.

Love your suggestion about the frizzled Cochin as well, though of course in my head the 'instead of' instantly transformed to 'in addition to' - because well, chicken math! Lol. I think I may have found someone who will give me some Cochin eggs for my next hatch though, so that might be the first one... Unless I happen upon a frizzle before that. ;)

If Tina goes broody before she lays an egg, you should write to Guinness records! I had a bantam mix that I think was half silkie that went broody after laying a grand total of 3 eggs, at the age of 5 months... So not impossible! And you are a very talented matchmaker, those two are the perfect best pals match! The new pics are all adorable.

Hmm I think trying to snuggle under other hens for comfort or warmth does happen in some breeds and chickenalities, even at an older age. My 6 month old bantam brahma does that - and she looks close to laying (they are the new girls and snuggle together, but the older one is fitting in faster, the younger one very attached to the one friendliest to her, so sounds similar to your situation)

Oh and I confirm that space is key for integration! Works even for chickens and dogs, lol!

@SAHchickenmom I think it's an unwritten law with chickens - they go broody only when you don't want them to! I hope you do find someone to incubate for you, that really is a great idea!

@randerson846 I really hope you had a successful hatch! I had two-week old eggs hatch fine last year, but they weren't shipped, so not sure what extra trouble that may cause... Anyway, fingers crossed!

@16 paws Oh Marie I am so sorry to hear the eggs didn't hatch! Glad you found a solution though and that the mom got the babies she wanted and all are doing well.

Wish I could be useful on mice control, but I am losing that battle myself. I try to keep everything edible closed up and inaccessible, but they are still around.. Not in the coop though, thankfully. My cat catches some, the chickens also chase them, so I figure they are just passing through.. Mostly small ones. I have tried all kinds of those repelling noise things, but none seem to work on tiny field mice.

Ooh just saw you posted a pic, so cute! Hope those babies get brave enough to show more of themselves soon! :)

I barely had any time to spend with the co-parents and babies today, but I will make up for that soon, as Friday is a holiday here, and tomorrow is my birthday, so hopefully shorter work day and lots of time with the chickens and the dogs. :D yeah, my concept of è celebration isn't exactly mainstream but I figured you would understand.

I did catch them at bedtime today, so here are a couple of blurry settling in pics

Good morning Team Broody

MM, I think I am nearly as excited as you are! Bring on the bubbies!

TG, I have been thinking some more about your Silkies and looking at the pictures again. I wonder if Gracie-Belle could actually be a Bearded Silkie? As I mentioned, I am not an expert, but body feathers she looks pretty much the same as Tina, fluffy with a few hard feathers on the wings. It is hard to explain, but her neck feathers look ‘fuller’. As they are rescue birds, maybe they just need some time to get back some condition and their crests may fill out? Also, having just been broody, Gracie-Belle would definitely need some time to bounce back to her glamorous self. I couldn’t see in the pictures, do they have blue ears?
I will say again that they are just gorgeous! I am definitely becoming a Frizzle Fan :)
Aaaaw, love the pictures, scratching class is adorable and eating lessons is funny but cute.
Beautiful big bird pics … seeing happy chickens foraging and bathing will never be ‘old news’.

16 paws, I am so sorry to read about the cracking eggs. You could definitely have hit the nail on the head with the bantam rooster, I have also read that, try as they do, the little guys just don’t quite hit the spot. Just thinking out loud, do the eggs you get have good, solid shells? Could their calcium intake need increasing a little?
I was feeling sad for Penny, I could imagine how she must have been feeling but ‘Mum to The Rescue’. I bet you could see the smile on her little face when she saw her new bubbies? That is great news that she has accepted them and now has some little guys to mother and love .. you are a top mum!
Wow, Penny is a big girl, she will be able to protect those bubbies very well … soo cute!!

On the mice, I have only ever seen one mouse in the garden and it had made it’s home under the fish pond, only being revealed when we rearranged the ponds. I am pretty sure Dusty would kill any mouse she could get a hold of and the Magpies and Crows we have around the place probably keep them in check also. I keep the 20kg bag of feed inside in the laundry (I have two inside cats who would definitely kill a mouse) and I top up a plastic tub with feed and that lives under the stainless steel barbecue in a sealed cupboard. I also only put enough feed out for the girls for one day (they get plenty to eat and are not hungry). I do not have an auto-feeder in the run.
Like TG, my biggest problem is feathered thieves; the local Dove population and Magpies think nothing of walking into the run and helping themselves to seed and whatever my girls have for breakfast .. this morning was mixed lettuce, tomato and sausage. My run is covered but when I let everyone out for a free range I leave the doors open so that they can wander in and out as they wish; also they run back to the coops/run for cover when spooked. This is when the Doves etc seize the opportunity and brazenly wander in through the open doors. Dusty cornered a Dove one day and proceeded to bash it up and remove all of it’s tail feathers.

IC, your co-parents are awesome .. love the pictures!
Thanks for the tip on snuggling and yes, the situations are similar, Lulu has attached herself to the friendliest in Tina.

R846, I am excited for you also … I so want to see those little baby ducklings

OK, time to get my day started … I washed all the windows yesterday and today is oven cleaning day; now that is one job I do not like

They do that.  it does seem like sometimes they know the good eggs from the bad.

Penny is a big girl.  Love the chick :)

my broody done that to me last year, she kicked out two and and i cracked them open and there was no development so maybe she wasn't a bad mother and she just knew that weren't fertile :) better luck next time and telia, only 27 more days to go woooo :celebrate !! Ahhaah

Good news !!!!! It's a Sara :weee yes that final egg has hatched and if it wasn't for some great advice from all the amazing people here we probably would have only had 5 out of 7 hatch but putting those last 2 eggs under the other broodies when mommy abandoned them to take care of her new babies I can proudly say all 7 eggs hatched but with sadness 1 died shortly after hatching it never even dried off !!! So once again THANK YOU from myself and the 5 Sara's and Ariel lol. Will definately post some family pics once I get a chance to get some shots :bow

All these babies everyone are posting pics of are just adorable
