so cute...she looks mama rgged!

Fantastic news TG!! I Looooooove Ameraucanas er… EE or whatever you want to call them!! I can not wait to see what you get!! Sounds like things are gonna be awesome for you this summer!

BTW, this FF is a HUGE hit here! They want it all of the time. I fed them a good bit this morning and I think that kept them from foraging well. I think I may switch to feeding them only right before they go to roost, that way they are forced to go farther than ten feet from the feed trough! I really need to figure out just how much is enough. Looking at them today, I think I might need to boot the saddles and start buying them bras! Their crops were so full and they would run to me every time I went outside!

lol on the bras. so glad they like it so well. I think that they will get back to foraging well once the novelty wears off. I don't measure so I am no help I just fill feeders when they empty. I do feed the FF to everyone but the mamas and babies get it exclusively until they start ranging.

I think Petunia is laying again. she was totallly focused on finding a nest this morning and totally not focused on her chicks which are 5 weeks today.

I need to name her two since them both will be living here permanently. Open to suggestions.

Enjoy the 3 day weekend fellow Americans!

ETA I just went out and Petunia has herself wedged into the 6 inch spot between the feed shed and the back fence. Hope she can get herself out of there w/o help. There used to be a nesting spot back there but it was so hard to get to I blocked it off. Have I mentioned that she and Norma are my craziest chickens? They are both nuts but it is part of their charm.

Also to see Jamie Lee and her 6 foraging on the green grass is just about the proettiest sight I have ever seen. On top of that Joan Baez is a marvelous auntie. She call the babies over for treats and never leaves JLC 's side helping to to keep watch on the littles.

16 paws, TG was the one who put me onto this great site:

http://ohlardy.com/fermented-chicken-feed

I use a Jenco Premium Coarse Grain mix. It is so easy and the girls love it! As I mentioned before, they have a beautiful shine and somehow look healthier than before, even though they were not unhealthy. Healthy looking, less smelly poops also.

I just have the jars on the kitchen bench, only two there at the moment because they got fed one this morning. The jar is just soaking in boiled water and I will set it this afternoon.

Congratulations on the new bubbies .. adorable, beautiful pictures also.

MM, love the piccies, they are just too cute!

HBT,

at I just have visions of them tumbling like a snowball down.

CC999, congratulations on the new bubbies also. Looking forward to the piccies.

Wow, everyone has so much going on at the moment, broodies and bubbies everywhere .. I got zip! Lolz

I mowed the lawns yesterday and threw all the clippings in the run. The girls are so scared of the edger and lawn mower but they love the clippings. A bit like a scary Father Christmas who brings them presents!

Just wanted to share a picture of my green-bubbies

This is Arnie Avocado when he struck in September 2012:

And, this is Danny Avocado when he struck in September 2013:

Yesterday Danny got repotted into his bigger home and now the two of them are best buds together; Arnie on the left and Danny on the right:

Everyone had a great time in the garden yesterday, it was beautiful and sunny and the five of them hung around together just one happy family. It makes a nice change to have everyone getting along, no stress, no broodiness and a nice status quo.

Still no eggs though! Lol
Blondie is 13 and a half weeks old now and just starting to make big-chicken noises; sadly she sounds like a baby seal! Lol.

I was sussing out Cilla and Dusty who were standing together, Dusty has the reddest comb and Cilla’s is still very pale so she is definitely not looking like laying an egg in the near future and still happy to play mumma. While Dusty has finished her molt and as mentioned, nice red comb, no squatting and no signs of even thinking about laying.

Tina is nearly 8 months old, so, who knows, she might be the one to break the drought. Definitely too soon for LuLu and Blondie to be thinking of laying.

You never know, one day I might actually get 5 eggs!

So again, no noteworthy news but as previously mentioned, that is a good thing.

Congratulations to you all on your bubbies in egg shell pyjamas and hatched bubbies .. keep the piccies coming :)

Arnie and Danny make me laugh. I have done Avocado seeds in the past. I think it is time to give one another go.

Re your egg drought: I have a thought...it is rare and this one is totally unoriginal... but here it is and it is about you and your birds. I was wondering if your girls might produce an egg for you if you upped their protein and/or calcium. I of course don't know anything but what others have said to people who have had an odd egg drought and those seem to be recurring themes. Also ACV and Chilli Pepper are frequently recommended.

My daughters are home for awhile and the asked me how many chickens I have...they are wise enough to know that the only ones who count are the full grown non-broody pullets and hens...I didn't actually know.

So here is my list:

The Silkie Sizzle team: Gracie Belle and Julie...aka the Taylor sisters for you Friday Night Lights fans.
The Colored Egg layers: Willa, Rosie and Mary Ann
The Australorps: only Buckbeak counts because Beakface is broody
The Delawares: Dottie and Harriet
The White Egg Crew: Joan Baez Jamie Lee Curtis( broody) Petunia (laid her first post broody egg today) and Blanche
Mighty Mutt Norma (no post broody laying yet...I deserve that)
Godiva...broody tease...but still laying
Sweet T aka Theresa currently broody

We are not talking about the roosters Both of whom lived on this property before I started keeping chickens so they don't count
We are also not talking about the 8 bubbies...keeping at least three of this group but they will only = 1.5 because one is a mini roo, one a mini hen and only one is a LF pullet

So counting broodies I have 16 but 3 are not laying and Gracie Belle and Julie count as .5 each so truly I have 12.

Teila,
Thanks for the link and the picture of your food. You are cute.
I wonder if they sell coarse grain here? Is it just for chickens? Sorry about all the questions but like I said before, I think my flock would like that also. No hurry, but the next time you are around the label could you let me know what grains it has? I will then ask the feed store if they carry it.
Thanks so much.

I also like your avocado story, they look very healthy.

Glad everyone is getting along well. That would be great if Tina broke the old egg drought of 2014! Lol
We should all make bets on who is going to lay the first drought breaker.

I say Dusty.

Go Dusty go

Thanks for the thoughts TG; I appreciate your advice.
They are still on the ACV as well as the FF but I do admit to taking their shell grit away when the bubbies were little so I have popped it back in there now. It definitely couldn't hurt and Blondie and LuLu should be old enough now.

I think the egg drought is probably related to molting, motherhood, young age and the fact that we are at the start of winter ... just bad timing I guess. Anyways, on a positive note, the longer the drought, the more special the next egg is going to be

I wandered over to check out the bag the course grain comes in, complete with pen and notepad to jot down the ingredients and there aren't any!
I can tell you that it is "all natural ingredients", "grown in Australia" and 'nutritionally formulated for optimum health" lol! Bit weird that the ingredients are not given.
Anyways, I can see corn, sunflower seeds, wheat (?) and a couple of other seeds but sadly I have no idea what they are :(
I think they would like anything as long as there were no pellets or crumbles in it .. definitely grain lovers :)

Yeah, it will be eggciting to see Tina's first egg but I am with you, I think it is going to be Dusty!

Tommysgirl,

Geez, I hope my kids dont start asking how many chickens I have
hu.gif

I just might have to play dumb for a minute

Does anyone know where I can get a few more coops?

Oh my!

Marie

I know that they do not need it but I spend many hours dreaming over and looking at pictures of bigger runs for my girls.
If I ever win Lotto, on the shopping list, after the house and land out of town, is a huge run for my girls and the best outside play house for the cats :)

Here are recent pics of my bantam babies...

I love the coloring on her and her crest puts me over the edge!

He has one too and it is SPECKLED!

Petunia ditched them last night and they were being picked on so I moved them into the broody box for the night.

Not sure where they will live permanently yet other than with me.

Have a great day all!
