Hating Waste As I Do.... (Pic, post #17, Top Complete)

When I'm not sure on a poly blend or cotton, I have two tests to help me decide.
First I pull a thread from the cut edge and pull it. If it breaks easy it's most often a cotton thread. A poly thread will be tougher.
Second, I hold a lit match near the end of a few threads. If it curls up as it is heated, it's a poly blend. A cotton thread will smoke.

I added that test to the first post of the June block swap. my grandmother taught me that.

burn a snip of fabric
if it is man made material it melts
if it is natural fiber it burns and leaves ash

this test also works for yarn with one more catagory
acrylic-melts
natural
cotton-burns clean with ash
wool-burns clean but has burnt hair smell
