Hating Winters

Although I live in the South, we are in the Appalachian Mountains where we can have very cold winters, although nothing like the winters you folks in the upper mid-west have. We can have long spells of very cold temperatures, but our snows usually come, look pretty for a few days, and then go away. Our home is on top of a mountain ridge which always gets cold winds during winter. During the summer we have spells of high temperatures and high humidity. I prefer the winter over summer for a variety of reasons, but mainly because I cannot deal with the heat and humidity like I used to, especially since I developed cardio problems. Even though I feel the cold more because of medications my cardiologist prescribed, I still prefer the winter.

A few benefits of winter (aside from the lack of high temps. and humidity): no yard work after fall leaves are raked up, no biting or stinging insects, no snakes, no tourists, and time to enjoy indoor pleasures like reading and enjoying the special warmth from a wood stove.

I hated Winter with a passion when I lived in Upstate NY. The cold wasn't so bad, the constant clouds rain and wind were. It was so miserable that snow felt like a blessing because it covered the mud. So glad I moved south, now I am starting to hate summers lol.

Turkey in oven, fire in the wood burning stove, and too hot in the house for me. Changed into a short sleeved shirt, and it's nice to be able to go outside to get some cool air on my face. If I had my way the kitchen window would be open.

NC isn't so bad if you are in the Appalachains, after so many awful winters I thought no way I could hate a hot humid summer and I was right the first 10 years. I remember working my butt off in 100 degree humid heat digging out trenches and mixing concrete with neighbors thinking I am nuts. I told them I was just happy it wasn't snowing. 10 years later my body finally thawed out and now I am planning my next move up in them mountains where the summers are not so bad.

I don't mind winters (fairly mild where I'm at, some snow but doesn't get worse than just below freezing) however my hands don't agree. I suffer from chilblains so I have well over a dozen pair of gloves, including "dress" gloves, fingerless gloves for typing, jogging gloves, garden gloves (fully waterproof, waterproof/insulated, insulated... none of them keep my hands warm enough to be out for more than an hour or so). Can't shower or wash my hands in hot or even warm water soon after coming inside (mmm having to take cold showers in winter!) as temperature difference worsens the swelling. If I manage it right I can get through the winter with maybe only one finger swelling up, if I don't, all my fingers look like sausages and are painful and won't bend. Ironically the rest of me is very cold tolerant!

That stinks!

Unfortunately I learned about it the hard way, when both my hands swelled up one winter and remained swollen for over 2 weeks. After that it's a constant battle every winter to keep hands toasty while the rest of my cold-tolerant self cool. I could try medicating for it but I'd rather wear gloves during winter instead of doing something to mess with my blood vessels or whatever.
