Have Just Put Eggs In Tonight 9th August 2011, Anyone Want To Join?

I'm going to candle tonight after it gets dark. I'll try to take pics. Hopefully I see some good news.

I'm debating on candling or not. My daugher would get a kick out of it. But I would have to remove my broody from the nest while I do it. I have never candled before.

So I dont have to make sure they are in the same spot or orientation after I candle them?

NOPE! She'll do all the work, al you gotta do is put a bright light (I use a small LED flashlight) up to the egg on the big end (where the air sac is) and look for veins and even some movement!!

Can I join? I have BCM eggs in one incubator and under a broody (August 8th and 10th). I also have BBS Orpington eggs under a broody and a mini incubator on the 12th. It will be very busy in a couple of weeks here with the staggered hatches.

All right, just got back from candling. For some reason, I couldn't get good pictures. Here's what I found though.

#2: too dark to tell
#3: saw definite veining
#4: don't think I saw anything
#5: clear, probably not developing at all
#6: Definite veining
#7: very dark, but I thought I saw veining
#8: very dark, but possible veining, and maybe even dark spot of chicken fetus eye.


I was hoping for definite movement like I saw from my rogue egg, but I didn't see that. The only egg of that color in this batch was #4, so I figure it's no good.

Candled last night. The 4 mystery eggs and 4 of my BR/RIR crosses were totally clear so they got tossed. The rest, with a couple of questionables, made the cut. Of course one of those I dropped and broke, so eggtopsy was in order. Darn... it was viable. nice little embryo. Kinda cute, but made me feel rotten for dropping it. More care next time.
