Hi, on thursday i had a hawk attack and one of my chickens died. The Red Tail Hawk keeps coming back, and i don't know what to do about it. What would you reccomend me to do to keep it away from my chickens? Is it illegal to kill or move it away? How Long should i keep the hens inside? Both times the hawk came by yesterday my hens came out, but i was out too, so i guarded them. Also almost any time the hawk comes by, a army of 14-18 crows chase it away, what does that mean? Thanks -Liam McIntyre

crows will pester it away, you could encourage them to hang around

VERY VERY VERY illegal to shoot/kill them they are federally protected

BUT you can deter them,
string up old CDs so that they wave around
put up a disco ball,

get these things:

Shiny, waving things seem to work well, but you will need to move them around every once in awhile

Good LUck!!!

Thanks! I haven't done CDs or Shiny things yet, but how do i encourage the crows to stay around my house? Thanks again, My hens will thank you for this!

i cant remember except for feeding them, my crows last summer knew my routine, like to the minute
i would go out feed the horse pout the chicken scraps in the yard, go feed the chickens and ducks, and as soon as i started walking away the crows would come down and eat with the chickens

Our rooster is our best hawk deterrent since he warns the hens and ducks and they take shelter. Hanging pie plates & CDs does work as well. Sorry about your hen. We've lost a couple to hawks over the years - one of our friends just had a chicken (barely) survive a hawk attack & we're currently nursing her back to health. The natural cycle is so brutal sometimes.

Would Getting a Guniea help keep away hawks? I heard that this might keep them away. Also is it illegal to capure hawks and move them to another state?

It was sad losing her, but i am at peace because that chicken achieved her ultimate goal in life, to be the leader, so I think she left the world happy that she got her goal.

I know crows nest eggs around this area, so i don't think they like having this red tail come by on there territory.
