Those are buzzards.
I have lots of different hawks here and they just do not congregate like that unless they are migrating, there may be a hawk in there somewhere cause they do fly with buzzards sometimes.
Here is a photo of hawks migrating over my place ,they were 125 miles off course, sure freeked me out, there were 100's of the flying right over my flocks for days and i do not have chicken pens so my birds were on their own.

zaz, when was that happening? i saw them again today, not as many but still a lot, and big. im wondering if they are in fact hawks but they are migrating right now? not to doubt the people telling me they are turkey vultures, im just trying to figure out what they are before i let my birds out again

Your chickens will tell you if they are turkey vultures or hawks. Mine do not hide or sound the alarm when the turkey vultures fly overhead....but they do when the red tailed hawks do!

We have alot of buzzards around here. Part of me says hawk and part of me says turkey vulture. There might be something dead in your area and their flocking to it.

I have like 3 or 4. I think they are getting ready to pair up and mate. One year I did get the pleasure of seeing a baby in a nest.It was so pretty-all white.

I stay outside with the hens since I still don't have a good run,and the snow/ice took down the bird netting. So far the hawks have not attacked. My son was able to get right up under the tree and see the hawk close up.Very exciting for him. I look forward to the time when our lot will be back down to 1 hawk. They fight for their territory with each other, and ofcourse the crows/blue jays attack the hawks. Busy busy around here.

We had the turkey vultures too. Look for the red on the bald head. They are very pretty flying and lol make my hens run for the shed!

I'd bet a dozen eggs that these are turkey vultures. Regarding hawks: I used to hate crows but now I love them - when the crows are around the hawks stay away. A few days ago I saw a crow chasing a hawk. I used to give all my meat scraps to the hens but now I toss some near the road for my buddies, the crows. GO CROWS!!!!

Hawks rarely hunt in anything more than pairs--if you've ever seen your chickens hide from hawks or birds at the feeder scatter when they are around, you'd know why. They can't make a kill with the prey scared off. Usually if you see more than one they are a pair and in the process of mating/raising young. Granted migrations are another thing but they don't hang around--those are fly overs and the flocks are generally mixed species. The pictures show masses of vultures riding thermals looking for or homing in on something dead. Unless your chickens are dead, you won't have a thing to worry about--then again if the chickens are dead you don't have a thing to worry about either.
