They have really large claws so sometimes even if they can’t carry it off they can pin it down and eat it on the ground.

A couple of times I have had hawks kill a bird not 10 feet away from me. It happened fast. I went ballistic and they did not carry off their kill. Unfortunately it's illegal to shoot a bird of prey except by a special permit. This is what a Red Tail hawk did to some of my birds. It found a gap in my netting covering my pens which I have since fixed. The birds were nearly ready to start laying. Good luck...
