Hay can be dangerous

I found my hens lay better with alfala than with the grass mix. My Bobwhites love to grab the leafy parts and haul butt, they then pick off the leafs. I never thought about them taking the stems but at least now I will watch the younger chicks to be safe. Thanks for the info. Glad to see the drama over this is dropping.

Wow, I think you're delusional. But, yes, on to the topic...
Personally, I've never heard of any issues with hay. In fact, my birds will eat small chips of their bedding without any issues. But, I have heard of free-range birds eating all kinds of things without harming themselves, such as bits of broken glass, wires, etc. So, I wouldn't be real concerned about it, especially with the amount of people who do use hay without issue.

yeah..there was a member..and her ducks got killed by a dog and all..and under her name it says shes "chillin out" right now...so..i am assuming they made her take a break from the forum....and wow! i just also noticed the register dates also.....interesting!...anyway...yeah..it sure is a small world! good luck with your birds..ducks and all kiddo! BTW..hows Dill? didnt you say you had a duck named Dill?

Yeah, but even if I did want to use hay again, I'm kind of allergic to it so thats another reason I don't want to use it. my makes me feel funny, like light headed and a little disorientated and I sneeze. Its bad enough my rabbits have to have loads of hay... my buttons did like it though, so I kinda feel bad so I've started shredding long strips of paper for them to play in instead. That way they can't swallow it and it's easy to clean up and I'm not allergic to paper.

I always use hay but sometimes for my small chicks I put a big pile under my riding mower and chop it up real fine, they love that way and no problems.

I forget what its called (I think it starts with a F?) but its dangerous when you mow grass and give the mowed grass to animals. I asked on another forum if it was okay t do that for rabbits and they told me about that.. I can't remember exactly why its dangerous though

It is called Fermentation and it starts to acure right after the grass is cut, most animals gut's can't handle it, like horses for one. but it is safe when the hay has already been aged and used only for bedding like I do.

Lol. Do you have neighbors? They probably think you're nuts. The things we do for our pets, huh? Lol.

LOL yep they sure do. I live in the country and all of the folks around here are pretty socially disfunctional, I don't pay much attention to them when they make dumb remarks about some of the ( their words ) new fangled things they think I am doing LOL. I just tell them hey!!! isn't that the same Tabaco spit stained shirt you had on yesterday LOL.
