Hay can be dangerous

my ducks only have hay in the winter for extra bedding. otherwise, they get dirt, grass (which eventually turns to dirt) or wood chips. they like the wood chips the best, they can dig under and get all the bugs!

I don't use hay in cages because it gets nasty way to fast. Mine do love to eat the tiny leaves and seeds out of the bales of alfalfa/grass hay I feed my horses. They go pick all the little pieces they can get out of the unopened bales stacked up and they also go out and finish off whatever small pieces the horses leave behind. I haven't had an issues with them trying to eat the big pieces. I think a little bit is good for them.

I use hay too, mostly in the winter. They love it. When I first put it down they are looking for lal the little grains and bugsin it. Then when its time to take it up I have to shoo them out because againt hey want to look for all the goodies under the mess they made. Never had a problem with them trying to eat the stalks or getting hurt on them.

I've seen some not so pretty looking scovies but those are beauts!!! ofcourse the first one i ever saw as a kid someone glued fake teeth on to its bill (no lie) and it had a peg leg ....and for the longest time i thought that was the only duck that had teeth! LOL! Then learned that no ducks do (alteast not that i know of lol)!

I think I'd be more concerned about ducks getting eaten by neighbor dogs and buttons killing each other, than about hay. Many people use hay without issue, same as using wire without issue.

I cleaned the cages everyday (and still do, sometimes even twice a day). Under the hay was newspaper. Like I said, I have no idea how his toenail got ripped off. That's happened to my ducks a couple of times too. Maybe it was too long? Anyway, I'm really glad it did rip off because if it hadn't I probably wouldnt have been there when my female button tried to eat the hay.

My buttons aren't killing each other (and never have) and my ducks aren't getting eaten. Please, if you haven't got anything nice to say to me, Bettacreek, just leave me alone. I'm sick of you acting as if you know me and my pets and I don't get where all this hostility has come from.

I know lots of people use hay. That doesn't mean some birds don't try to eat the hay. Lots of dogs play with sticks too, but that doesn't mean every single dog will not, without a doubt, chew the stick up and eat it. My dog does that. Maybe I have weird pets. Just thought I'd warn everyone so no one has the same experience I did.
