Wow. I have never seen that before. I'm assuming that you could see more detail than we can in the picture and you know it's a rip and not a foreign body. How is she acting? Was there any matter or goo in the eye that would indicate the start of infection?

well i think even just from the picture it's easy to tell there's a beak shaped peice missing. I read that ripped and scratched corneas have no problem healing, but chunks missing?

she's out walking around like normal. I noticed her eye was partly closed yesterday and today it was more swollen. it's not infected.... yet. She will be checked again in the morning, I'm putting muprocin on her tomorrow unless someone gives me a good reason not to.

I think an antibiotic sounds like a good idea. She will likely do fine without it, but why risk an infection if you have something appropriate on hand to protect her against one.

Gracious! That pic makes my eyes water just looking at it. Poor girl.

Good luck.

I don't know if I'd blame the rooster as this hen could have torn her cornea by foraging. Anyway, a non-steroidal eye ointment won't hurt. However, if she stuggles to the point of causing more damge, I'd just watch the area for a day or so.

am I seeing things or is that a piece of straw/hay in her eye? thats what it looks like to me. Can it move easily??? the first photo looks like a piece of grass or something. So with humans...you know how when we get an eyelash or fine hair in our eyes....the eyes mechanism forms a protective barrier around whatever is in our eye. ( this will sounds gross) but then when we pull it out -FINALLY-the foreign object comes out in a stringy eye goopy manner surrounding the object?? do you know what Im saying?? thats exactly what this reminds me of....does it moves freely??
