Healthy snacks

Hello! I was wondering what kind of snacks would be suitable for a 3 week old peachick, other than scrambled or hardboiled eggs and cottage cheese. I have heard people mention giving their chicks things like broccoli, crickets and cat food to supplement their diet. So far I have only had the courage to feed my little guy cooked egg yolk and a tiny amount of cottage cheese. Would love to hear from more experienced owners about other safe treats that I can introduce to my peachick’s diet. Many thanks!

Until someone comes along who raises these, I'll just throw my two cents out there.

Generally, we don't give chicks treats until they're at least a month old, and some will not until they are 8 weeks old. This is because the nutrients in their feed are essential, and snacks or treats, even if healthy ones, still deprive them of these nutrients.

I did look it up and kitten food seems to be good treat too besides your scrambled eggs.

I would just give treats when you're trying to teach it something or to warm it up to you better.

My neighbor has 3 peacocks and they're about a 1/2 mile away, but they come to visit. I'm so enamored with them! Good luck!

Thank you so much, Debbie! What you said makes a lot of sense to me. Your feedback is appreciated :)

Good advice Debbie. Ours get nothing but the starter until they go to the ground at 12 weeks. Without grit they can become impacted and die.

Hi, KsKingBee.
I was considering putting my peachick in a chicken run. It will be 7 weeks and 3 days then. Is it too soon? It is becoming problematic to keep mine indoors. I just saw now that you only put yours on the ground at 12 weeks. Any advice is appreciated.

My concerns would be if the chick would be pecked on and if it would be warm enough at night. Also being in a run used over a few years the ground will harbor cocci and worm parasites which would not bother the chickens but is deadly to peachicks.

Those are all very good points. The enclosure is brand new — I got it from Amazon and debating whether I should assemble it now. There would be no other bird with it, but I fear snakes, and maybe even mosquitoes. I am now considering assembling a structure inside my garage. Just hope it wouldn’t get too warm.
