Hedemora Thread

Krista any update pictures?

I have been trying to find out a bit more on these, its coming slowly. but I have learned enough that I want to get some this coming spring.

Since my last post I have moved to NE Wa state, right now have 22 F and 2'+ of snow here. Seems like a climate meant for the Hedemora, and vice versa.

How many others are now keeping them?

I am looking forward to having them join us here.

One of the coolest --and coldest-- things I've seen is a flock of hedemora happily scratching in the Montana snow at Christmas this year.

They sound like me - can handle very COLD weather - hate the HEAT - unfortunately the Chicago area has BOTH - the sound great - cold hardiness plus mild temperament.

I don't think Chicago would be a problem. We kept a few in Florida this summer and they made it through the heat. But, I will say that they seem a lot happier in Montana. It's a little strange to see chickens laying eggs in winter while living on the side of a mountain in Montana. The feather colors are pretty amazing, too.

We also have this newly imported lemon blue hedemora rooster from an unrelated flock that we want to blend into the Montana flock in the spring of 2012. He's now in Florida and enjoying the winter weather. (Hard freeze next week.) I'm really drawn to the varied color patterns of the hedemora. This roo should make some nice offspring.

The hens are super quiet. Certain poultry outlaw types might consider going in stealth mode and they would probably be okay with a small hen-only flock. Not that I'd advise that, mind you.

Those single combs are pretty large, I would expect them to get some serious frostbite, one of my Icelandics with a S.C. got nipped about an inch worth when it was down to zero a couple weeks ago.

Colors and size are very much like my Icelandics.
