Helllp QUAIL Chicks (two now) with an eye issue w pic of ulcer in eye

Well I bit the bullet and just gave them the smallest injection I could get into them (i barely pushed the plunger..). As I had mentioned I used this same antibiotic (oxytetracyline) on a 4 day old baby bunnie who wasnt breathing very well within the next day (i gave her two doses (24 hrs after the first dose) and she was better hte next day....I had no idea how much exactly to give her either and I ust guessed and pushed very lightly....she's fine fat and adorable...(3 weeks old now).

I hope I just did the same for these three...garh...

that was really hard let me tell ya...trying to hold down a tiny chick in one hand wth my fingers, pluck away some chick down, on teh thigh and avoid dinging the thigh bone....they deffinatly did not like it and i hate it because i had to push in pretty far because the hole at the bottom of the needle the opening was pretty "huge" for a baby chick...i felt soo horrible...I hope that it helps though...

one odd thing to metnion though the two chicks that had the uclers....the film over the entire eye went away, though they're still sporting the ulcers...the chick without an ucler ddint get a weird cataract looking film in his eye when i gave him teh terra so it mustnt have been the terra that caused it...

do you (nn) or anyone else happen to know if i should give them probiotics now? I have some in paste form.

The other odd thing to mention is only the one chicks eye is swollen teh other two are fine...

i hope it's just dust causing this though i doubt it... darn it.....

here is the ulcer on the chick with the swollen eye (same eye as the ulcer ofcourse):

no nasal discharge, no hacking, no odd liquid coming from the eyes, the eyes do look watery, however no water is leaking out of the eye itself....3 chicks in the quarentien tank the newest one does NOT have an ulcer though...just keeping one eye closed like it hurts.

I would wait about three days before giving the pro-biotics so it doesn't hamper the Oxy. Now it is just a wait and see. Please keep us posted on this.

Soo....

right before i went to bed last night I checked on the chicks in the "normal brooder" only to find a few more with eye ickies....


woke up this morning found one more in the brooder that looked miserable....


So now in the 'medical brooder" I have 10 sickly acting chicks. Some are just crashed and others are acting like nothing is wrong except for a sore eye...

the chick I took out of the brooder this morning was gasping for breath....

After all of this I sanatized my hands, and gave ALL the normal brooder chicks a shot of oxyterraymycin, im not taking any chances anymore.

They're all quiet now like they dont feel well btu im sure iwouldnt feel well either after someone just stabbed a very large needle (for their lil tiny thigh) in my leg...

All the chicks taht are sick are the 5 day old normal coturnix quails. My 10 day old button- perfectly fine..singing, not a care in the world...theres still a bunch of normal coturnix in the normal brooder acting fine....

I had one hack up water on me...but i honestly think i grabbed it right after it was done drinking and kinda puked on me lol....i wasnt taking any chances though and after it swallowed some of what it puked up (clear cool water) i put it in teh medical brooder.


SO ALL of my chicks are on antibiotics now...i hate hate hate that i had to do that to esp. the new borns who are only less than 24 hours old, and I hope that they do okay with it.

The ones i gave a shot to last night are fine today...one did die however that'd be my fault...i dropped it while trying to give it a shot while standing up....stupid stupid stupid....

why do they have to be so squirmy...

SO im pretty sad today....and helpless too if it wasnt for NN (thank you) i think i may have just culled all the sick ones....but them finding me taht link on merks gives me hope....if ANYONE I MEAN ANYONE has any advice they can give me on any experience with quail having this problem please please PLEASE post here...I am despirate for help...

Well since it's obvious barely any one knows about this illness (since no one has replied on any site i've put it on- except for NN really). I am not mad ofcourse as it just shows that people have never expierienced this problem...

I'm going to keep updating this though incase someone else down the line expereinces it with their quail so they can see what happened with mine.


just wanted to say though, that I haven't had any other chicks in the normal brooder show any eye signs of problems. they've all since perked back up (the shot of antibiotic seemed to down them fora few hours). They're eating and playing and I'm not really worried about them.

The 10 in the medical tank, they are still sleepy acting, but eating and drinking and preening but no playing...some calling though.

I may treat the sick ones again with the antibiotic the kind I use normally only one dose is needed, however I can treat up to 2 more times, however just 1-2 is reccomended. SO i may treat the obvoius sick ones again once they hit 24 hours since thier last shot...but I'm not sure yet as it seemed to just make them more miserable...so I think i'll wait longer than that before i give another shot just incase they perk up before I'd need to take that step...cuz giving them a shot wasnt easy...therse actually one chick that may need put down specifically because of the shot...it can't stand normally on its leg, anothers leg is obviosuly tender and will only put weight on it if it has to...i probably knicked the bone or something really ouchie like that which again makes me feel horrible.

I am just so glad they're all still eating (both normal brooder and medical brooder chicks), and none (i repeat) none of their poos look abnormal, no one is sneezing or having any obvious difficulty breathing...

I will actually be surpised if any die from whatever this is...I do sort of wonder if it is congentital....hmm...

Next time instead of the injection take their food away an hour or so before and just put a tiny amount on some moist mash and give them their meds that way. And mix it up for each ind. chick. It takes a little longer for it to kick in given orally but you have given the first dose IM so it really shouldn't matter to give it orally.
