Hello all!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

I had 4 day old chicks outside in 23F weather and they were totally fine. They darted under their brooder plate when they needed to warm up then out they came again. I guess I broke the law!
Pass on the chicken wire. It's not predator proof. Use 1/2" hardware cloth instead.

Awesome thank you that's good to know! It's hard to be sure if you don't wanna risk it. Seems like a lot of people are over protective and concerned with their chicks, and them also a lot of testiments to how tough chickens can be

I have a built in brooder in the coop. They experienced a lot of cold temps. I also had a broody raised bunch. They were on the ground at 2 days old. They are one and all alive and thriving.

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! My chicks and chickens love meal worms too. I keep it to less than 10% of their daily intake of food. If I give them a different treat then I skip the meal worms. Actually my older hens get a mix of meal worms and some scratch, but many on here have cautioned against giving them scratch, which is predominantly corn. I'm not sure why, except perhaps it is fattening, but their regular healthy feed is their main diet. Everyone does it different, but keep in mind that the chick feed, and later all flock feed, is formulated to give your chickens all the nutrients they need.

That definitely makes sense, il admit I might treat them probably too much. I just assumed it was benificial. Is there any way to be sure I'm getting the kind that are more nutritional? I don't know a lot but they don't seem cheap. 8$ for a bag of dried nightmares seems like plenty haha
In what amount and how often do you give meal worms? It really does seem to make them excited and happy more than anything else so far except maybe corn on the cob

There is a visual difference between the two. The empty one will look like a papery dry skin of a worm with what looks like a black shriveled tube thing running up and down it's body. The more nutritional kind are yellow inside and generally more solid looking. I'm assuming you got the meal worms from TSC? They carry a brand called "The Honest Worm! Premium Mealworms" which are freeze dried with yummy delicious innards intact. Unfortunately based on price you're getting the empty ones. For good mealworms be prepared to spend ten dollars more than that or less. The Honest Worm! is $17.99 at TSC, so it says online. That's what I was getting but I stopped since they free range anyways.

I suppose you could give them all a small handful to share every other day or less, though other people are different. Chickens can do just fine with no treats for their whole lives. You could also use them to train your chickens and dish them out like that. They love corn on the cob, lol. Mine went crazy for the dried stuff. Hope this is informative.

Hello and welcome! So happy you joined us. Thank you for sharing pictures of your chicks. They're beautiful. I love barred rocks! I have 1 Cockerel and 2 pullets. My BR pullets are the most gentle and sweetest!
Thank you! And aren't they just the best? Haha I am very very happy with everything I've heard about barred rock hens and they seem to live up to it for sure!

Thank you I will remember that, I think I have been within reason of that, I give them maybe a half a handful between the three, 1-2 times a day. However I have one that practically prefers wood chips and I can notice it's feathers are not as developed :/
