Hello! After months of learning from BYC, I finally signed up! Happy to join the conversation!!!

I have month-old lavender ameraucana with a hard mass about 3/4" below her vent. Could it be impacted stool? I did get a few drops of epsom salt water down her yesterday, but don't want to overdo it and cause more problems. Other than the mass, she was panting a bit, but definitely not overheated (dehydrated maybe?). I offered electrolytes, but I'm not sure if she drank any.

Any help would be so appreciated. Thank you!

Sounds like you need to put your chicks bottom under some warm not hot water and just let the water run on the hard area for a minute or so then rub lightly and it should come right off and a little Dawn dish soap to clean the area .......

Some Probiotic in the drinking water and a hard boiled egg for a week will help clear this right up ......

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry about your baby. Gander X2 The chicks need some probiotics in them. Change it and make new daily. This will help with digestion, any yeast or fungal infections in the intestinal tract. Keep all of the chicks on the probiotics for several weeks and this should clear this up. And after you get this cleared up, it never hurts to use probiotics a couple times a week to boost the immune system and keep the harmful pathogens from taking hold.

Good luck with this chick and keep us posted on the little baby!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! The chick is a month old? X3, would try and clean her up as best you can and see what it really is, it could just be poop stuck in her down/feathers, if it is that far below the vent could also be something going on with her navel.

Thanks to everyone for the help! The mass is internal, not a pasty butt situation. I lightly massaged it earlier and she pooped as soon as i set her down. The mass seemed smaller after. Just impacted and keep massaging? Probiotics sound like a healthy plan either way! Cheers!

Alright sounds like you got some good help and you chicken is a bit better oh don't for get the hard boiled egg as there are vitamin B-3, protein, and niacin and the niacin is great for clearing out the internal pluming in conjunction with the Probiotic your chicken should be better soon ......

hi again! the chick is now 7 weeks old. she still has the mass, but it is now soft and a bit smaller than a ping-pong ball… feels like a full crop might feel. she is still eating, drinking, growing, and moving about normally. it doesn't sound like ascites, as her feathers are growing normally in the area. do you think it could be a hernia? is it weird that it started out hard? maybe was impacted poo due to malformation that is now causing swelling? i'm stumped! thanks again to everyone who gave me input thus far!
