I took care of chickens many years ago when I was in middle school, but just got back into them approximately a week ago. A couple was moving and could not take their backyard flock with them. I currently have ten chickens. There was supposed to be nine hens and one rooster, but I think there may be two roosters. Now that we are done setting up the coop and run, I will take pictures of them to compare to mature photos of their specific breeds.
The flock consists of two Rhode Island Reds, three Barred Rocks, three silver laced Wyandottes, one black EE, and one barnyard mix. I have been using Barnyard Chickens and a FB group called Chickens, Chickens, Chickens, as well as any other website I could find to get myself up to speed on how to care for chickens. For example, we are building a freestanding roost for our run using a picture posted to this website.
We have a place on six acres, with 2 rescue horses, 3 rescue kittens, and two dogs (one rescue). So getting chickens was something I was supposed to do this summer, but decided not to wait. Thanks for letting me join!

G’Day from down under Violet :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes for the New Year!

Glad you're here Violet!

If you haven't yet, please make your poultry a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise.
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, please get your chickens some Vaseline or bag balm to stave off frostbite before they get it! Baby, it's cold outside! :D

Welcome to BYC! (Aka BackYardChickens) :welcome Its great to have you here with us! Thanks for joining! :wee
