I am not new to chickens- I have had some almost every year for about ten years now. This spring we acquired 28 new Rhodes islands, barred rocks, and for the first time ever rangers, acanas, and white silkies. (Hope I said all of them right). I found out about backyard chickens.com while trying to research whether colloidal silver will help cure a hen whom I think? May have Marecks disease. Pleasantly NOT surprised to see that someone on here said it worked for them - because CS is THE BOMB In my opinion. In all my years though have never until this year lost birds to this disease until now - never knew what it was even. I started chickens in order for my small kids to learn how to care for, and have compassion for animals (and eats eggs for breakfast). We are a very outdoorsy family who goes camping every weekend at the lake, waterskiing, and boating. We have a Maine coon cat (weight unknown) and a Saint Bermastiff that’s weighs at least 180#. (He eats eggs too- but doesn’t ever bother the chickens LUCKILY!)

Welcome to BYC! You could try asking about CS under the diseases tab, you should get some pretty helpful responses there! I love Maine Coons, my husband is anti-cat though :hit It's the only critter he gives me a hard no on. Do you have any photos of your dog? A St Bernard x Mastiff sounds really pretty (And HUGE) lol.

Yes, I am familiar with CS but only in reguards to using it in wound care. I've seen CS heal up some really horrendous wounds in record time so yes, I am curious as to how it would be used in regards to MD.

@Ladyofkris, Welcome to Back Yard Chickens! You have Marek's in your flock? Have you tried CS? In what dosage and with what results?

I've lost more than 20 chickens to Marek's in the last year and a half and before fall will be culling most of my Buff O's and Wellys because of them slowly declining from the disease. Even if there is some confirmed benefit to using CS if for nothing else than to strengthen the resistence of my 'healthy' birds, I would be willing to give it a try.
