Hello from Alabama! Reading for years, finally planning coop

Hi everyone! I've wanted chickens for years and now finally convinced (read coerced) my husband to agree :)
He can build ANYTHING and puts great effort into all his projects. So..... I want to get my design right the first time. Let me be clear, I have NEVER raised chickens before. I want a coop with growing room but I plan on having 4-6 chickens to start with a max at 12 later on. MY brother-in-law has chickens and will give me some starters to have eggs immediately. Maybe later let one of my hens hatch out some chicks. Anyway, LOVE this site!! So excited to be a part of this community!
To answer the introduction questions:.....
I found Backyard Chickens on Pinterist (wonderful site with great info)! I have a wonderful, talented husband who can build/create anything. Our only son is away at college. Currently we have 1 dog, a rescue border collie mutt, one moma cat and her 2 eight month old kittens. I want to have a coop for chickens this year hopefully (fingers crossed). We live in the country and have several acres but I want the coop pretty close to the house. Hubby and I haven't agreed on the location of the coop yet. As we live in central Alabama, there's no level ground anywhere so...... it will take some manuvering to get the coop in it's perfect spot :)

Have you checked out the Coops/Runs articles? There are 100's of ideas you can get there that will help you get it right the first time. Be sure to make it BIG, chickens hate to be crowded and it will help you keep it clean if you can stand up and move around in it.

Welcome to BYC! :welcome

I suggest starting with at least 6 chickens, but that's just me. My friend had 6 chickens but a predator got 3 so they were only getting about 2 eggs a day.

12 chickens is a very good amount though. I have 12 amazing hens who I love like family.

Also, I'd suggest trying them from chicks unless they are tame, because the chicks will be friendlier to you in the long run.

So fun to see your excitement about chickens. So many of us suffer from chicken hysteria. My chicken math has led me to the brink of hoarding! I currently have two sets of baby chicks. One set is five weeks and the other three weeks. That's eleven. I have 6 bantams (d'uccle millefleur including a rooster) coming in June and 4 Spitzhaubens coming in September! That's about 20 chickens for my first year! So welcome, welcome! :jumpy:jumpy:jumpyetc.
