In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I am a new chicken mama. We purchased our fluffy little girls just about one week ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 9 chicks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 5 RIR and 4 Americaunas. One of our RIR chicks didn’t make it two days after we brought them home. When we went to get her replacement, they gave us 2 because they didn’t want the new chick by herself in the box
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Fresh eggs and help with natural pest control, among other things.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I went back to school after a 20 year break, I enjoy gardening and I also do a bit of crochet. I’m a DIY kinda person.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband retired 2 years ago after spending 22 years in the Marine Corps and thats when I decided to go back to school. For the past 5 years I was a tax professional, working only during the tax season. However, this year I decided to concentrate more on my schoolwork and getting my feathered flock started. We have 3 children, with the youngest graduating HS this June. We also have 2 dogs with one being a rescue.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this site while doing research a few years ago. Since we weren’t ready to start our own flock at the time, I bookmarked the page. My husband is currently building our coop. I’ve done a lot of research on raising chickens and the many different types of coops. Research only gets me started as experience is the best tool, that’s why I decided to finally join BYC.
I’m more of a research and read kind of person. I prefer not to ask redundant questions if they’ve already been asked and answered. So if I ask you all a question, then you know I couldn’t find the answer.
Thanks for the add!!
