Hello and welcome to BYC

Glad you joined us!

Hi!
Thank you all for your warm welcomes!
I wish there were more chicken hatcheries here in Canada. Seems like most of them are in the USA.
Although in the future I could start up my own hatchery and it would do well..I hope

I think there are only 4 or 5 here, maybe 6. But since I am in northern BC not many will mail them to us!
I would like to have some ducks too but my dogs (Australian Shepherds) would chase them unless I put a kiddie pool into their (Duck/Chicken) pen. We will just have to wait and see

Hi and
welcome-byc.gif

Glad to have you here!
If you only got the chickens recently, it's likely that they may still be settling in to their new home and it'll take a while for them to start regularly laying again.
It also might be because the chickens are young (how old are your layers?) and at first there can be a lot of soft shells when a hen starts laying. Our chickens also started laying soft eggs before they stopped for their molt, so it might just be the time of year too.
I'd give it a bit of time.
I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site.

Hi!
Thank you, I think you are right. They are 1 year old (Not sure of the exact dates).
I went in there (Chicken house) the other day and there was one nice large normal brown egg, and there was one soft egg w/out a shell. So the 2 eggs are obviously from different birds. Also I think the soft egg is from the one chicken who has not much feathers underneath her belly. She must be moulting because I put that dusting powder stuff on all of the chickens (Kills lice, ticks, and other things alike). Or maybe she had lice or something? It could be possible because this summer has been surprisingly warm. The feathers are just starting to come back in. I am hoping that all will be well soon!

It's most likely a molt then, given it's almost end of summer.
When things have settled down the eggs should start getting tougher again.
Good luck! :D
(Also, make sure the hens actually know to eat the oyster shell, we had to mix some in with the food for our hens because they didn't eat it on its own.)

Yea I think it must be too.
Although where I live it gets very cold and lots of snow so chickens don't lay very well in the winter here.

Of course I will use a heat lamp to keep them nice and warm in their house

Yep, I sprinkled the oyster shell all over the ground in their outside pen, and in their house I mixed it in with their food.
