Hi everyone I'm from north San Diego county and will be starting up my coop this fall.
I have raised birds before but that was many many years ago up in Maine.
Any insight to who's the best for SoCal area thanks

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Australorps, buff orps, EEs, Sex links and sussex chickens are all good for cold and hot areas. They are also great layers and generally friendly. (Sex links can be aggressive.) Be sure to check out the links attached for more on breeds and getting started.

Best wishes!

Welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community! Definitely stop by our learning center. Mountain Peeps has left you with the link. Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! I used to raise Black Australorps in the northern Sacramento valley where temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F in the summer (123 F once). I provided shade and plenty of fresh water for them and they did just fine. Not only are they very hardy, but they are calm, gentle birds and great layers of large, brown eggs. Let us know what breeds you do end up getting and good luck with your flock.
