Hello from South Carolina!

Help....

I am close to getting my chicks, but need to decide where to get them. I want to choose which breeds to get, so the feed store is out (unless there is one that sells breed specific chicks). I only want pullets, so I do not want to incubate them myself, and I only want 4-6 chicks, so most online sites are out.

Any advice on where to go for chicks?

I have heard you can order as few as 3 chicks from My Pet Chicken. I have never ordered from there but there are few places that let you order less than 15-25.
Good Luck!

Have you checked local Craig's List?
I've seen laying hens for sale sometimes.
I can't have 25 birds either.
Only hatcheries that can get less than 25 birds I know of are Ideal and My Pet Chicken. I've heard more good things about them than bad on this forum.
You can specify the sex of the birds, but it's not 100% gurantee either.
If you ever end up with the birds you can't keep, the options are either sell, give away or eat them, I guess. And I'm willing to learn to do all of them

Hey all sorry I feel off the board for awhile I was at Clemson for a Master Pest Control coarse for the week and got back yesterday just in time to pick up a shipment of chicks. I got RIReds, WRocks, WGiants, SLW, & Araucanas. So I was working with them the rest of the day. I only lost one in shipping out of 37.
TMK my kids love to crab also. It is almost to hot to do anything outside today though. We love it down here though. It just takes a little time to get use to the heat every summer.
Nadine we have not had any problems with the coons and gators so far I do plan on traping the coons and getting rid of them in my area the best I can. The gators are not an issue in my area.
Hi Nccountrygirl my mom lives in Hubert NC . I have no idea how far that is from you though.

Nccountrygirl it is just a real little town north of Jacksonville NC. She moved there when I was stationed there. I got stationed down here, she stayed.

It is so good to see some chatter on our SC board.

Anyone lost any chickens or chicks due to this heat?

I lost a blue Cochin chick yesterday that I am sure was because of the heat. We put qt bottles of ice with water in the coop floors and the chicks were all hunkered around them and had fans blowing but those poor adults and 3 week old chicks were panting something awful. It is only enclosed on 2 sides so the coop is airy and there was a decent breeze but it was just hot as the dickens.

Good morning Nadine

I am a little worried about the heat too. It's gotten as high as 98 deg in the coop and its in full shade during the afternoons. Hopefully things will cool down to the 80s by Tuesday.
I'm just keeping them in fresh water and checking them often

as they are too young to hose down.

wishin for cooler days...already.
