For the last three years we've been living on a lovely 80 acres in the rolling hills and aspen parkland of Western Manitoba. We currently have just under 50 laying hens, a mix of Partridge Chantecler, Black Australorps, and some other farmyard mutts....this occurred when our ISA Brown Layer actually went broody and hatched out a strange brood last year. We have one rooster. HE is a smart, gentle Partridge Chantecler named Majestic who takes great care of his flock and manages to fertilize almost every egg in the bunch.

We also have Welsh Harlequin Ducks, and a little batch of 25 Pekins that my daughter is doing for meat this year. The WH are wonderful layers, and I highly recommend them to anyone who'd like to start a small farm flock.

Welcome to BYC. I bet your 80 acres is beautiful!

Well, I think it's heaven. We've got a bit of a yard, 28 acres of pasture, and some (mostly) aspen forest....and we are so fortunate that it was a farm for many years before we got it, so the yard is surrounded by mature spruce trees, and there are perennials, fencing, barn, etc. in place. Which is good, because I'm too old to start from scratch!
