Hello I am new to BYC. I plan to get chickens

German shepherds really were developed to be stock dogs, so if your dog comes from working lines, he/she should be trainable and helpful. The herding style of GSDs is a little different than border collies or Australian shepherds. Traditionally, GSDs helped to move a flock (sheep) to a grazing area, then patrol the boundaries of the pasture to keep the flock in and predators out. You can work with this behavior for your chickens. Let the dog have free access all around the coop and run. It shouldn't be difficult to train him to patrol the boundary. Of course you still need a predator-proof coop and a well fenced run, but your dog will be an extra deterrent.
